granny shifting vs 'speed' shifting
wondering if the gent who suggested 1/4 mile times A) has ever run them him/herself B) has an RX-8 yet C) could explain for those of us that don't know what is 'granny' shifting, and what is 'speed' shifting. Once you've answered these questions and then explain these two distinct types of shifting then I'll let you know which I'm closer to.

A) I am no expert or professional, but I have over 100 passes down the 1/4 mile.
B) Yes, a black SP with less than 600 miles. I'll take it to the local IHRA approved track when I feel it is broken in.
C) 'Speed shifting' is when you shift gears while leaving the accelerator planted on the floor. 'Granny shifting' is where you let off between shifts. This may be abusive on parts but is very helpful to acceleration, especially on cars with light flywheels. On my vehicles I have found a .2-.3 second difference in the 1/4mi speed shifting vs 'granny' shifting.
I've posted this elsewhere but driving skill makes a huge difference in 1/4 mile times. Shift speed does matter. The first 60' is the most important portion of the 1/4. I have yet to see a car that is faster by intentionally spinning the tires vs being properly launched (I suppose it is possible on some poorly setup/tuned vehicle). On the other hand, time to speed (i.e. 0-60 or 1/4 mile trap speed) isn't greatly effected by wheelspin.
D) I have built approx 25 rotary engines(stock, ported, turbo), built/tuned many more, and owned around 12 rotary powered vehicles over the last 20 years (it was Chevy before that). That being said, there are a great many others (on this forum and elsewhere) that have an infinitley greater amount of knowledge than myself. Unfortunately, on this forum, anyone with an internet connection is on the same level as a racing great like Dave Lemon. If someone has good information to share, great. If someone is here for 'questionable' reasons, the moderators need to ban them. Paranoia, speculation and flaming don't belong here.

thanks for the shifting clarification. I would say that I shifted closer to speed shifting than granny shifting. In just day to day normal driving I allow the engine to slow to approximately the new gear's RPM at the current speed when shifting as I'm sure many or most of us do. But on in a timed run where my only goal is to get to the other end in the shortest time possible it was very close to what you describe as speed shifting. The only difference I think is that since I was shifting at 9200 and the fuel cutoff is around 9300 I likely did back off the throttle for about 1/20 - 1/100 second, give or take 1/500 of a second. I do know that when I had DSC disabled that I heard a small tire slip when shifting from 1st to 2nd and I think maybe from 2nd to 3rd also. IF I could have gained .15 seconds then I would have hit an even 15 seconds. The difference between 14.5 and 15 seconds is either the car just can't get it or traction control limited it a bit. Given my unexpert 60' time in my 2nd run I don't think it is the launch technique. Once I disable traction control I would be curious to know going in what you think may be the best, on street tires of course, launch RPM and desired amount of tire spin at launch. I'm thinking with it off that 6000 is still a good starting point. If I could get enough runs in I could play with that in the 5 - 8K range. But I'm not going to do a ton of runs with launches at 8K just to prove my car can do 14.8 instead of 14.85

one last thought. I saw a couple cars going down the strip so slow that I could probably have beat them with one foot and granny shifting. So I'm certain that was not the technique I was using.
