Mechanic says either the exhaust leaks or its the cats? What should I do? Please dont flame me I'm new to the club. I've read a lot of stuff on here but still have a lot to learn.

 

How should we know what the issue is? You haven't even given us any sort of description!

Mileage? Modifications? Check Engine Light (CEL)? Maintenance history? etc etc?


Oh, and have you searched, before making this thread?

 

I'm guessing your cats are exhausted.

Or leaking.

Really, get a clue and some data - does it start? is there a noise? is it on fire?

Hard to diagnose without some history.....

2nd motor in car. New motor has 40k miles. No problem starting. New plugs. Wires need replacement. Check engine light comes on every once and a while

 

are you grabbing the code when the CEL comes on?

 

how about your coils? failing coils can cause a cat to go bad which can cause an engine to go bad. more info is needed. the cat is warrantied but you might be out

Your only problem is the CEL? You should be able to hear/smell an exhaust leak.

 

How many total miles on car?

next time the CEL comes on, go to an Autozone and have the code pulled.

Could ba an 02 sensor, or a misfire from a bad coil. hard to say without the code.

 

Have the code read when it comes on the next time. That is the only way to diagnose the problem with your car. Keep us updated.

 

The CEL comes on and before I get a chance to take it to get pulled it goes off. Idk it turns on and off. Never stays on long. Thanks guys

Cel flashing is common. It's a misfire.


Car runs too rich from factory.

If you had an exhaust leak after the O2 sensor you should be okay. Before the sensor the the car ECU would cause all sorts of problems and a cel as it try's to compensate for wrong fuel mixture.

Any leak can be heard and or smelled.
