Gearbox shifter hot to the touch

The shifter in my rx8 gets super hot during long drives. and by hot I mean super hot to the touch. Tranny fluid swapped few days ago but problem still there.

Anyone have this problem?

Is the passenger floor also hot? If your catalytic converter is missing the heat shield, that would do it. Especially if your cat is not super healthy.

Never really paid attention to the passenger floor but the cat is new and the heat shield was already inspected by Mazda to be fine.
