You can certainly get more by trying to sell it privately. It is time consuming, and can be downright annoying when a buyer trys low balling you, but you will definitely get more. However, you are still gonna little for it, because of the prices new 04s are selling for. IT's a no win situation. You always take a bad hit when you trade in a car, but unfortunately for the RX8 it's proven to be an absolute nightmare. My STI has a much higher trade in value then my RX8, and the msrp was 4k less. On initial reports, they had the STI depreciating more then the RX8, but that has proven to be completely wrong, because the demand for the Impreza has far exceeded the RX8. Ask Ike about trade in. He was offered over 17,000 for his WRX which is over 2 years old, and a boatload less then the rx8 was when he purchased it. He would take a much smaller hit. Who would have known. That's just the way it is with the rx8, so we have to accept it.

Always remember that they will try to steal your car for nothing. When I traded my 2 year old car in for the RX8 They quoted me some ridiculously low price and told me that they would have all this "stuff" to do to my car before they sold it etc. and it would cost them. HA! It was immaculate -no dents, no marks in the interior and it was beautiful. They put it on the lot a week after I traded for $7000 more than what they gave me! I am sure they played a little with the price but that is QUITE a difference. BTW someone at the dealership ended up buying it because I've seen it there parked in the back when I go for service.

One thing that hurts the resale of any car is the rebate market and what you can get a new one for. The RX8 locally had a rebate for $2500 off sticker in any rendition so right there I would have to plan on going with that NEW figure myself in a trade. I of course paid sticker since it was the first one delivered in my area. I am not getting rid of mine but give it a few more years and I will start looking as I always do. The RX8 has shortcomings but they are not numerous and it is a great car for the money.

So what do you all think? I have a four years lease, with about 3 1/2 years left. Obviously I can wait until the end of the lease, but I made the mistake of getting the A/T, so if I want to get rid of the car before the 4 years are up, do you all think it matters if I do it now, or two years from now? Right now, the miles are low, as is the wear and tear, if I wait, that could change. However, maybe it's better to wait and see if the value stabilizes.

You'd be better off keeping it at this time. The damage on the 04 is done, and nothing will change that. However, it will subside. and you can enjoy car for another year or two and not lose out like you would in first year. There is no taking away the depreciation that is already there, but in a year you may only lose an additional 3-4k from what you lost now. Too early to tell, but that is a strong possibility. Cars always take their biggest hits after first year. The RX8 took a a way above average blow, but as with all cars, it will not keep that pace.

I'd have walked away very fast from that deal. No way I'd let a dealer get away with that, no matter how much I wanted a car. Had you walked, they would have raised it up. That tends to happen, but only if you are willing to let it happen, not haggle the hell out of them, or do not shop other places to get better deals. The trade in value on my car is $22900. I'm sure they won't give me that, but even if they did, it's still way below what was expected after first year, especially since my car has msrp of 36k, and it's only a year old with only 9500 miles on it.
