My Voided Warrenty

My Voided Warrenty
This Monday I took my car to Mazda. I have an auto transmission and for the past few months its has been slipping. (it wont go into gear right away, clunky shifting and what not) well up until today, they didn’t know what the hell was wrong with it. they determined that there was a big problem with the transmission (dur), but since I had installed a K&N intake, they wouldn’t warranty it. They said that Mazda tech wouldn’t mess with it at all since there was an engine modification. WTF!? I thought that an intake couldn’t void a warranty?!

but ... something it's true.. if u mod the car.. they will always make some excuse about the warranty..!!

tranny issue has nothing to do with intake. they have to cover the problem under the warrenty.
edit: get rid of the K&N anyways. its not helping you at all and could cause several issues like rough idle , loss of power, decrease in mpg etc from causing issues with your MAFS. its not going to help you with this dealer since they already saw it. but they should still do the work to find the problem with your tranny and also to fix it. have you checked your tranny fluid?

i feel your pain man, my dealer just told me they won't fix my stereo because i had a bass box. that's fine because i have a lot of things to complain about my car. they already have new headlights on order. i am going to have a new car piece by piece because they ticked me off about the stereo!

well, 2night i was so pissed about this i took off the intake anyway. i knew it didnt give me any more power, but i liked the sound. so now ima wait a week or so and find a different dealer to fix it. and i will "forget" to mention i had an intake on.

This topic has come up before on various other boards.
The way the law is written is that your warranty can be voided on a related subsystem for use of a non-OEM component that would have otherwise been covered by warranty.
So for example, your engine warranty could theoretically be voided for say chipping (since the ECU is obviously a warranty-covered part), but it could not be affected by your decision to use a Fram rather than a Mazda oil filter. Essentially if you could go in and have them fix the part under warranty, if you swap it out for an aftermarket one, your warranty may be at risk.
Note also they can't say, refuse to fix your glove compartment under warranty if you chip your car; it has to be a related component.
In the case of the airbox, I suspect some argument could be made that changing the engine's power characteristics could affect the tranny, but unfortunately if everyone took a hard line on it the only way you'd find out is after spending lots of money taking Mazda to court.
In short, the best approach is what you're doing and what one should always do before taking your car in for warranty service of any kind - make sure it's back to OEM specs.

Update.....
I took my car to a different dealer last tuesday, with the stock airbox on. I called today check on their progress, and they still are looking into what the actual problem is. So it looks like the first dealership didnt enter my car into their computer, or the current one hasnt checked yet. If i cant get a warrenteed fix, will pay for the repair anyway.... the problem is just annoying now.
i didnt get a courtesy car....... im using my first vehicle to get around... 1989 Jeep Comanche. Complete with a busted radiator and no power steering
i miss my car

Well I have been thru this dealer warranty issue. I ended up going to a dealer out of the regional managers area. Now I get great service and EVERYTHING is under warranty. I am getting a new motor as we speak.

As you've seen dealerships vary. I went to one with a busted heater **** and asked for a replacement ****. They claimed it would require pulling the entire console assembly and immediately covered a rental. After driving three days in the rental they determined they didn't need to pull the assembly and ordered a new ****. I was amused that they covered $75 in rental for a $3 part.

well i just got some good news (no i didnt save a bunch of money on my car insurance :D )....
i called the dealership today to see how things were coming along... and they tell me my car will be ready for pick-up next friday. they are replacing the tranny. asked if this was gonna be covered under warranty, and the answer was yes . the lady i spoke to did mention that there was an open file on my car for this problem, and if i had gone to a different dealer before. i said "yea but after 3 days there was nothing done."
so the good news is that as of now the repairs are gonna be under warranty, but the bad news is i have to wait a whole week till i see ol' blue again but it will be worth the wait i think.
*as for the courtesy car... i didnt ask for one. didnt feel like going thru the hassle. plus dont u have to be 21 to drive a courtesy car? (im 18)

well, the friday pick up was postponed till today. but wow oh wow was i happy to see my car! just sitting in it again felt like the day i brang it home. it even had the "really really new car smell" again! altho she was completly dirty. took her right home and washed her in the dark. as far as the problems... all gone. smooth shifting when its supposed to happen. and best of all it was covered under warranty. the whole tranny was replaced and now i have my car back...
there are such things as happy endings!

The intake can only void a warranty IF....IF they can prove the intake CAUSED the problem, Id Est, if you take the car in because the transmission is broken, they can't deny coverage because of an intake.
However, if your car injests something an it ruins the engine because you decided it'd be cool to not use a filter - just like the turbo guy you saw at NopiNationals, they'd have a reason.
Oh...and you may not have read the whole thread - the guy already has his car back, problem solved.
