Going to buy an 8, need advice!

Well, I've got a 2004 Tiburon GT V6 that I want to trade in for an RX-8, and I've got the finances straight.

At the very least I want the Touring package, grand touring if they have it and can hook me up. 6-speed.

Anything I should know, about seeing if they have a new 2004 left-over versus a 2005? Any special dealership stuff you recommend? Anything about the car I should specifically be worried about and check before I walk away with it? Any options that are a must-have or anything?

I'm eligible for S-plan pricing - anyone know of a dealership selling new lower than the S-plan?

I'm an autocrosser, so this car will /rock/.

Any tips?

At this juncture, I wouldn't view a 2004 or 2005 as any different unless it was in pricing (assuming the 2004 is new). And really, there isn't anything special to be worried about other than making sure the car is up to snuff on recalls and MSP04. A 2005 definitely would be, a 2004 you would have to ask your dealer to furnish proof.

Once you actually own the car, you will just want to educate yourself on the warm-up and oil issues. Otherwise enjoy the ride!

MY honest advice.....

Dont

Buy one that is.

Yes the car is great, but the SERVICE is laffable. It is totally pathetic.
If you do decide to get an 8 ensure it is a good one and not one that has "problems"

Mine has the "notchy/grindy" 2nd gear problem when cold.
That on my first service appointment they "couldn't reproduce"
and on my SECOND service appointment (at a different dearlership) the SHOP FOREMAN and I went out....he agreed..."something is wrong"
I'm sure you can imagine my dismay when they call me 2 days later to tell me my car is ready and that there was really nothing wrong with it after all as they "test drove a couple of the other 8's on the lot and found similar circumstances" thus....its "normal"

Yeah right.

So, basically I'm stuck with an occasionally grinding 2nd gear until the problem becomes "worse than those few (3-5) shifts per day"

Lovely service advice is it not??!!!

stay away....at least until 2006

My 2005 has been trouble free for the 4 weeks I have had it. Not a huge amount of time, but I am very happy so far.

There have been problems of various types, but most owners seem to be happy. I was looking for a newer '04 (VIN 130xxx or higher), but could not find one with the right colors and options. Ended up with an '05. It cost several thousand more, which made lease payments a little higher, but felt more secure in my decision.

I think reading these boards can get many a prospective owner real paranoid about the car. I think many people have great cars and you got unlucky with your tranny. Perhaps someone on the boards in your area who is knowledgeable will offer to take a look at your car... cause I agree when it comes to problems that are somewhat difficult to diagnose, most dealers are pretty much useless.

If you play a lot of CDs, check whether it has the six-disc changer. They all come with the buttons that say discs one through six. But the six-disc changer is an option.

If you want a good deal on a RX8 call Peter Pickering at Mountain Mazda in Hamilton.
Phone number is 1-800-663-8571.
He'll look after you.
Good Luck!

Don't get me wrong.....I absolutely LOVE EVERYTHING else about the car.....But the tranny thing really bothers me. Once the car warms up.......its great (for the most part). I'd be "elated" with the car if the tranny didnt "go through me" as it grinds....

(do note....this grinding is happening while shifting at 3k while cold.....ususally after about 10 minutes of driving with stopping and going at about 8 red lights during that time, the shifting then begins to "wise up".

What I'm trying to say is that the car itself is totally awesome.....
Hell.....I'd trade it in for another 8 tomorrow if the dealer wouldnt corn hole me and I'd just hope to God that I get a "disease free" tranny.
