08-09 RX8 Opinions
Hello RX8 owners,
I am new to this forum, so please be gentle. I am considering buying a 2008-2009 RX8 either the Grand Touring or the new R3 models, and of course these would be in manual trim.
I have read many reviews regarding the Wankel engine, (i.e. burning oil, milky oil, etc..) but many of these post were from 2004 model engines. I was wondering if there were any changes made in the 2008-2009 models that fixed most of the problems that were discovered? Also I am having a hard time trying to find information on the reliability of later model engines (i.e. +2006) hope you could steer me in the right direction.
Hopefully you could provide me an unbiased( or as much as possible) review of the car. More specifically +2006 model owners with manual transmission (yes I read about the transmission problems too). Hopefully there are hardcore drivers out there (both mileage and sport driving).
Most importantly, if you could do it all over again, would you buy a RX8 or would you get something else.
Thank you for your time and honesty,
Jason

Burning oil is not a problem, it is intended. It is necessary.
Milky oil, I believe you are talking about on the dipstick, is basically condensation in the tube when it's cold, and I know the dipstick tube is different for 09, and if I'm not mistaken there is a TSB out now for the earlier models.

Hi Jason. Welcome to our humble abode. You should be able to find a wealth of info here.
In a nutshell tho, the 2008 & 2009 RX-8's are primarily cosmetically different in body style, interior, and with some minor engine/ gear ratio tweaks. So, you should probably decide which looks better to you, as engine changes are mostly negligible. The R3 has better suspension/ wheels/ body kit, but it doesn't have a moon roof or the rotary accented seats.
The Renesis engine burns oil, so yes- we have to check the levels every other fill up. Not a big deal and u get used to it. There are plenty of ppl here who've had issues with their cars but even more that have had no issues. If u want a stable, reliable car, then try to stay away from modifying it. The RX-8 is not designed to be the fastest car off-the-line acceleration wise. But, it can out-handle and out-maneuver many other cars on the road. It does get worse gas mileage. But, if you love the car, then you'll grow to live with these imperfections.
As far as the buying goes, I think I can speak for most of us that we love this car and would definitely buy it again. No regrets or buyers remorse here. Good luck!

i would not call adding a third oil injector and changing the side the ppf as minor tweeks..

Also what is ppf? and how is that advantageous to the original design?
Also, Detrich said that they changed the gear ratios, if any of you have the old gear ratios, i would appreciate it, as I have the new 2009 brochure with the current ratios.
Thank you

I could not get dealers to come down more then $700 on the ')(, so picking up the following this week...
Just Purchased an '08 - New Jersey. Picking it up later this week if all goes well, Here are pricing details.
New '08, MT. 40th Annv, with Spoiler and Sires radio.
List with dest $32,795
Dealer Disc $ 3,995
Mfg rebate $ 3,500
-------------------------------------------------
Total Disc $ 7,495
Net Selling Price $25,300
Approx NJ tax 7% $1,771 (assume it applies against net selling after disc)
Plates, Title, Reggy $500 (Estimate)
--------------------------------------------------
Out door price $27, 571
Down payment $ 5,000
-------------------------------------------------
Total Financed $22,571
5.19% 60 Mos $418 per mos
I'm sure if I waited till end of month, I may have gotten $500 more off, but there is a risk in not many MT cars being out there. Dealer had 9 of these, 8 were AT. Dealers were not interested in selling at deep discount anything they had to find.
Car has Sires radio, I have no interest in at all. I would like to add something that mimics accessory package and rotary accent package, If anyone has a source for this kind of stuff, I'd appreciate it. I'd also like to purchase a spare tire kit.

Please excuse my ignorance on this matter, but i am assuming that by adding the third oil injector it's intended purpose is to lube the seals in the engine better...right?
