V8 swap

I had an email out to Hinson Motorsport and they just replied today. They have updated their site, the engine is in and all the wiring is done and they are gonna be working on headers. It says they want to get pricing done in the next few weeks for the subsystem and mounting.

This is interesting in my book as I would love to have an LS3/6 powered RX8.

To me though the engine is the big down fall to the RX8, I love to drive a car around curves and winding rack roads and open it open when I can. Though the rotary engine has more pick up then my current Solstice the reliability is not there. I am not so keen on replacing most parts on the rotary about 3-4 times more often than a piston based engine, I also would like to go places lets say the bank and go inside and be able to come out start the car up and drive away. Can't do the latter with a rotary engine I have been told. If I could do this with a 8 right now I would buy it in a heart beat since my gf likes to go out for short trips and I don't like driving around in grocery getters (shes not picky with cars, but I am.)

Though it is fun to drive as I drove one recently when deciding on my next car. With the swap I would get that opportunity to go and stop and ironically the 8 would have a double meaning though not intended (corney yes.) The other benefit would be better performance from an engine with relatively no MPG loss.

I looked at the Crossfire as my other interest but to get a V8 in that would require me to go to an automatic and thats not happening also would have to be a Benz engine. Not gonna happen with either of those two limits.

When you have a RX8 you don't want to just take short trips, you want to be driving the thing constantly. Its truly addictive. Sometimes I take my car out for a drive just to drive it and not driving anywhere in particular. I've had my 8 for three years and love it just as much today as the first time I drove it. Maybe even more now with the mods I've done. Its like having a motorcycle and just going out to cruise. My fiancee has a Solstice. Its a great looking car but has no ***** what so ever.

If pricing isn't too insane(like some hinson stuff), then I will probably be buying this kit very very very soon, just cause its ******* drool.

Their website says they are using a T-56.

If its on par with other swaps its gonna be in the 10-15k range for everything including motor and install. I base that off the install for a V8 in a Solstice. Though if you take out the motor and labor I am betting its gonna be just a couple grand and I can't imagine it being over 5.5k. A used LS from a GTO or a Vette are pretty cheap on ebay.

Viper Spec T-56 and a Camaro/Corvette based T-56 are pretty much the same. They are geared the exact same, just with the Viper Spec T-56 having upgrades shift forks and a few other bits.

If Hinson's pricing is like their FD kit, and you can do it yourself, and you get a cheap LS1 swap, figure 5grand or under.

For those who don't have a welder or the tools to cut and mod things...I think the kit would be awesome.

I just wished I would of waited a few months to do my swap...lol I now work at a fab shop and have access to any metal, tools, presses, welders....you name it it's got it. So I guess anyone needing some fab'd up parts let me know...I get the metal for cost and free to use anything anytime....when I'm off the clock.....that includes doing all the welding that's needed!!!!!

As far as the rx7 vs. r6......I'll make a video sometime and post it. I'm for sure I can smoke the r6

Guys at Hinson have some problems with planning. I've created table to track their promises:
V8 swap-hinson-rx-8.gif

However, hope that Hinson will release the kit soon.

I've been following Hinson since they announced the development of the LS conversion kit for the RX-8. The time chart definitly puts things in perspective. But I guess if it's as good as the other kits, it should be worth the wait.

The T56 in the older Camaros are quite a bit different.

Anything with an LS3 in front of it has the T6060 transmission, not the T56.

For the T56 (LS1 & LS2), the Camaro, GTO and Corvetter gear ratios are not the same.

The older gen 4 Camaro LS1/T56 are different from the newer T56. How do I know? I priced out the rebuild kits. The older T56 is super cheap, while the more recent T56's on the GTO/Vette have carbon/kevlar synchronizer ring assemblies.

Navigating these waters is not simple.
