Swap engines to save mpg does not make sense at all

T4XJS 02-03-2013 06:02 AM

He's already pulled the engine out, which is way more than the usual 15 year olds who start "I'm going to swap engines" threads.

It doesn't have to make sense. Or even make the car better. A few years ago I saw a Ford Anglia with a V-8 swapped in. I wonder what excuse ("It'll help on on-ramps") the guy made when his wife asked him what he was up to. Practical or not, that such projects are undertaken makes the world a better place.

got engine mounts made up..
to make up gearbox mounts had to take interior out.. seats, carpet etc so it does'nt get welding spatter marks, burns as its very nice condition, excellent trim in these cars.
:D:

carbon propshaft is about the same weight as a normal steel one...
maybe able to use the diff, gearbox mount (girder)
at least the weight is in the best place, down low and centre...
and hopefully use part of the cat, exhaust section.

only problem is all these "wonderful sooo reliable swap" always end up running like crap cuz problems will arise one after another, then u will see it at classified ads soon after, and of course, the "smart owner" just fade away and back into the shadows :)

Personally, IMO projects such as these should not be permitted in this particular forum.

While everyone has the right to spend their pennies as they wish, I am not so sure transplants such as this (and others) are in the best interest of the Club Forum, RX-8 owners, future owners and Mazda.

I certainly do not believe it belong in RX-8 Tech, (I thought I moved it to Lounge or Discussion, so it appears it has been put back here).

We really should have a sub forum for Frankenstein Projects..:)

BTW, I like how the Saab Exhaust is running on the other side to the Renny, how the pump is hitting the Engine Mount/Chassis Rail...

OP, are you going to run the Exhaust Pipe out through the Hood??..or Roof maybe?

nycgps 02-03-2013 11:43 PM

One thing forgot to mention is they are usually from people who cant do rotary right(read: too dumb to learn) and THOUGHT its easier to swap than just spend couple hours to rebuild the engine.... blah, he will just fade away real soon anyway, mark my words :)

simonmd 02-04-2013 01:33 AM

Well, he's done it. If it had been me and I had those sort of skills and equipment, I'd have bought a rebuild kit and tought myself how to rebuild a rotary.

Sure, many cars over the years have been re engined, usually to improve them. The Anglia mentioned above for example was never known for its power! But to me, the engine IS an RX. Imagine getting an old Ferrari and ripping out it's engine and dumping in a big block Chevy V8, sure, it'll be stronger and more reliable and the Chevy engine is great in its own right but the car has had its soul ripped out!

Now the OP has every right to do what he wants of course, its his car and I must admit the engineering side of me is curious to see how it ends up but other than an experiment to see 'if it can be done', IMHO, it's a waste of time. WHO is going to pay anything like what a 'real' RX8 is worth in the future for a car that has been altered so radicaly? Combine that with the fact that insurance will be very expensive (if not very hard to get at all) and he'll end up with a running car that'll probably be worth LESS than an original car with a blown rotary engine!

I hope it is reliable, cos he's going to be stuck with it for a long time! ;)

T4XJS 02-04-2013 02:30 AM

If i wish to sell this once complete theres plenty out there waiting to buy cars like this converted, maybe not is USA, AUS but the UK it will sell for good money..
I only paid £475 for the car.. yes £475 gpb.. good running 8's you can buy 2005 for £2500.. dirt cheap..? theres loads over here for £500 non runners.. I'm going to look at another one for £500, engines in the boot hehe already out..

a running saab turbo powered 8 would be worth more in scrap here in NZ

RE or GTFO

he has done what? cut everything up kill the balance of the car and the integrity of the chassis ? and all the unknown problems that WILL SHOW UP FOR SURE down the road? LMAO

anything could be done, hell you can drop a Izuzu V6 into it y0 ! Saab is known to be garbage, but every once in a while u can find a jewel in a pile of garbage (I found a 100 bux bill once in a pile of garbage, I mean it) but hey what are the chances ...

lmao, there were so many "swaps" over the years and 90% of them FAILED Big time and of course their "omg i know my shit" idiots just "disappeared" cuz his shit never ran right ... LOL

err, I'm NOT SO SURE if anybody is STUPID ENOUGH to do that ... it's like you are asking Richard Gere to do porn ...
