Reprogram new key to new ignition?

I'd like to buy a used RX8 off of a guy near me, and it has a few minor problems: needs a new battery, some exhaust work, new cat, all stuff I can take care of no problem. Unfortunately, the key needs to be programmed to the ignition module.. which isn't so fun.

I know that it'll most likely have to go to a dealer, but does anyone know of any ways to do it at home? I've done it before with two administrative keys on a different vehicle, but not sure if there's any loopholes as to doing it on an RX8 with nothing but a new key.

Also, since this RX8 is used will I still be able to take it to a dealer?

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb set of questions. I'm 17 years old and this RX8 would be my 5th project car already, I've worked on Honda S2K's, Nissan S14's, seen a bunch of different problems but I've never dealt with reprogramming keys WITHOUT a copy on any of them, so I'm a little new to the topic.

And before you ask, yes I searched the forum for a similar thread. And yes, I used site:rxclub on google.

Thank you in advance for any help

A dealer or a locksmith with the correct tech should have no problem programming keys.

There is no way to do it yourself without a way to program the ECU
