Exclamation P0410 and P0172

Hi everyone

I'm new on the forum so please excuse me if I am ignorant. I also wasn't sure how to create a new post so am resorting to using the reply tool on this forum.

On Saturday just past I was leaving the shop and when I tried to start my RX8 it seemed to struggle to start and then didn't (2006 model). Then when I tried again it started fine but the engine check light didn't go off. I proceeded to drive home very slowly with revs below 3k. I didn't pick up anything wrong with the car though, but it may be difficult to judge at under 3k rpm? Anyway, as instructed by Mazda dealership I drove it in, again slowly with revs below 3k all the way.

They have done their diagnostic scan and apparently there are two error codes that have come up, P0410 and P0172. I have done lots of googling and blog reading around these two codes but haven't once come across someone who has both at the same time. Mazda have indicated that it can be several things starting with the air pump and followed by the sensor, both of which are very expensive (quoted R20k for the job), however, they can't guarantee that this will fix the issue!

Can anyone please advise?

Just because you have 2 different codes doesn't mean that you have 1 problem that is causing them both. Considering the nature of P0410, I doubt that P0172 has anything to do with it. More likely you have 2 different problems.

P0410 is a problem with the air injection system, which only runs on cold start while the cat is below operating temp.

P0172 is detecting a rich condition, and the sensor info is ignored until after everything comes up to temp.

So the chances of these being caused by the same problem is extremely remote.

Address them independantly.
