Can someone please explain all the acronyms?
I'm not a car wiz and I don't know anything about rotary engines, so can someone either define all the jargon like "cat-back" and "cel" or direct me to where all that stuff has already been defined
I know this is stupid, but this thread Is for new members, and I have no idea what all the acronyms or names are for engines and parts

cat back refers to the segment of the exhaust located after the catalytic converter. A CEL stands for check engine light. Most commonly a red light that looks like an engine on the dashboard.

So my 8 has a high pitched rattle when I accelerate, Any ideas what it might be?
I already looked at the thread for Marbles in a Can/Sand in a Blender, and that's not what is sounds like
It is general just the first few gears and at lower rpms

It could be anything that spins or oscillates

Spinning: Wheels, brake rotors, wheel bearings, axles, rear diff internals, driveshaft, transmission gears, transmission input shaft, pilot bearing, release bearing, clutch, flywheel, rotor tips, accessory belts, alternator, water pump, AC compressor

Oscillating: ignition, intake valving, some solenoids, combustion, exhaust pulses

I may be forgetting some. Can you be more descriptive? Maybe get a video of it for some audio?

ok this is a really dumb question... is it normal for the area under the hand brake and the cup holder console to get really warm while driving?

Warm? Yes. Really warm? probably. Painfully hot? no.

It's a hard thing to use as a diagnosis over the internet. Excessive heat there generally means a clogged cat though, one of the indications anyway. It can be clogged without that heat.

New owner, I have a 2004 Velocity Red 6 speed manual.
I like the Velocity red colour, it is a metallic colour.

My quick question, what other colours in the RX8 range are also Metallic?

I'm especially interested in these colours.
Is there a Metallic Black?
Is there a Metallic Blue?
Is there a Metallic White?

Just after the Mazda names for them please!

$400 is a good low end price. $550 is probably about average, $900+ is often typical dealer.

It's a common thing, not rotary specific, so a non-dealer shop will probably be a better choice.

I forgot to ask last question on paint subject.
Other then Forza game, is there some PC software I can get with RX8 (with maybe kit options) that I can try different paint styles, add decals, racing stripe designs etc?

If not, I'd settle for some side, rear, front, top view templates I could use in Powerpoint to fill colours.
I've never used Photoshop, really don't have spare time for it.

So, I would think by now there should be something out there to do this with preloaded RX8 model that I can doodle with to work on ideas I have.

So I just bought an RX8 shiftable automatic (I know sucks) but its whatever I live in New England tons of snow and RWD is bad enough. So the 2004 rx8 sport has 76000 thousand miles and I need to know what to do I just got it yesterday. Ive heard to drive it like I stole it and not baby it which I love. Change the oil every 2000 to 3000 with like 10w40. what should I get inspected the sparkplugs I hear have problems and the coils. On the carfax before I bought it everything was great except it failed an emissions test back in 2012 in New Hampshire, I dont know their restricitions but I live in Massachusetts AKA Taxachusetts. Much help would be appreciated Im lost guys

cnobreegs, have you actually read the new owner's thread? This one: New and Potential Owners START HERE! - RX8Club.com

You need to get that compression test on the engine. No, 2004s are all out of the 8yr 100k factory warranty due to time

questions

Can someone explain the differences between from the 2009 and 2011 RX-8s? I've looked on websites for various aftermarket parts. Some websites will say 04-09 or 09-10, I was just wondering if the parts won't fit or if the websites haven't been updated in a while. Also did the RX-8s ever come in a beige interior color?

The difference is people paying attention and people not.

2004-2008 = Series1 RX-8
2009-2011 = Series2 RX-8

There are some things that are the same between them, but quite a bit that isn't. Many websites just have no clue what they are talking about.

If by beige, you mean tan-ish in color, then yes. It was available for some exterior colors across various years as well as on 2005 Shinkas.

Thanks I have two examples of them
AIT Racing Body Kits : 2004-2011 Mazda RX8 Front Bumpers | Body Kits & Aerodynamics
this one says that their front bumpers will fit 04-10. By the pictures I can tell for sure that some of them are series 1 and I'm not sure about the others.

AEM Cold Air Induction System: Mazda RX8 2004-09 | Air Intake | Mazda RX-8 | Mazdaspeed Parts - Mazda Speed Store
This one says this induction system will only fit 04-09

Which years will these actually fit?

Purple?!! If there's a color people use to describe my car, it certainly ain't purple. When I first got the car and had to pick people up at the airport, I'd say "look for the purple car." No one - and I mean no one - ever saw a "purple" car. "Hey, you said you had a purple car. This is black."

In real life it's about as purple as Dr. Pepper Black Cherry soda, which isn't especially purple either. Maybe that's why it's not called "Purple Cherry Mica".

I know, my best friend had one. It's closer to purple than another other major color group. Even if people mistake it for other stuff all the time.

I thought Lightening Yellow was a mica or metallic Mike??..

There were also some True Reds (solid) in Series I (2007 MY I think) , but only for JDM market.

ALL 2008 (April production, 2008) on-wards are 2009MY up to 2011 MY, and 2012 Japan only are Series II.
