UK Help - product recall

Dear All

I phoned Mazda on off chance my car had some product recalls so I can get some free maintenance work done. they have told me that I can have all my spark plugs replaced.

What would this achieve? I will book it in for the work regardless as free spark plugs.. Has anyone else had their recall completed? what change did it make? more reliable idle? as that is the only issue I would say with the car, it floats between 750-950rpm rather than holding a steady rpm.

The almost incomplete combustion nature of the rotary causes carbon deposits to build up on the spark plugs, shortening their life substantially. It will always be a good thing replacing the plugs if they've had some miles put on them, why this is a recall im not sure.
I changed all the ignition components at once coils, plugs and leads and i noticed better throttle response and an improvement of around 3 mpg (uk), this was at 31k miles.
More deets on your car would help determine whats needed.

Sound Mate.. Still learning, all the issues I am paranoid about I have searched and all seem standard..

my car sounds same as yours 31k so hopefully slightly better MPG to come.

The Mazda dealership made out they were doing me a huge favour for accepting the recall.. I said its a recall.. not free work on my car.

Had all my airbag replaced on m3 last year through recall..

appreciate your reply.

You will want to replace the coils and wires at the same time actually, if you can do it yourself I would as the dealer will charge an arm and a leg to do that (sorry not very clear, if the dealer changes the plugs for you, take your car home and replace the coils and wires after). You should do plugs, coild and wires all together in this car. It is really easy to do and there are several DIYs on this board on how to do it.

FYI, they ARE just doing this to try to get your business, proably to see if they can stick you with more services that you will have to pay for. Plugs are $20 each, so $80. I'm sure they can get them cheaper, so it's a small price to pay if they can convince you to do other work.

There was no recall for plugs, and there wouldn't be. Here is a list of all recalls from Mazda up through last year or so, bolding the RX-8 recalls: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...5/#post4372093

As far as what replacing the plugs will do, you will want to read the new owner's thread linked in my signature, it has a section specifically on the importance of ignition health, what problems can be caused by ignoring it, what you can gain by keeping it healthy, and options for replacement. Lots of other information in there that you will find useful too.

Wow.hugely appreciate the helps and advice from the posts. What I have learned in two weeks about my lovely shiny rx8... they are the most unreliable cars I have ever come across.. touch wood mine is fine. I have never heard so many problems... so basically they made a car which drinks more fuel than my M3 remap decat and from what I hear the cars alll break down.. wtf. So not impressed now. I should have done my research prior to buying. Doh

Keep in mind that nearly every car has a litany of possible problems. My 2002 Toyota Corolla's engine lasted 34,000 miles less than my Renesis, cost me far more in unexpected repairs, and left me stranded quite a few times (vs once for my 8).

It's all in how you maintain it, and how well you pay attention to what it needs. Just knowing about the possible problems tends to automatically help keep them at bay. The people that get them all are the ones that have no idea it could happen, and show up with a completely trashed 8. But it's really true of any enthusiast car. Go to any forum and you will see that it is largely a list of people complaining about one failure or another.

For the 8 though, it's like dating a high maintenance woman. Giver her what she needs and pay close attention to her and it will be a very fantastic time in the sack. Ignore her and she will kick you in the ***** and drain your bank account before you can realize what is happening.

Still, if owning an 8 makes you nervous, find an opportunity to trade it for something you will be happy with. Everyone should find a car that they thoroughly enjoy, and the 8 isn't for everyone.

thanks for the last reply, made me laugh and smile... drove my car around today and i must say it puts a smile on my face more so than my last car, and as you say, maintain and read about potential problems and it should be fine.

Good advice

The purpose of this site is to scare away potential RX-8 owners and run the value down for current owners.

At least that's the way it sometimes seems.

Hey mgestic, proper maintenance and understanding is all she requires for years of happiness, I mean the car, not the woman lol. Would never trade in any of my seven rotary cars over the past 40 some years, but I should have traded in early the two wives I have had.

I bet they were more problematic than any car issues you ever had

You are so right Pistonhater. And yes I hope to get the new rotary RX7 or RX9 or whatever it is called if it happens. But I also plan on keeping my 2008 40th AE RX8 which I love and is all paid for.
