Replacement Engine Issue!

Hey guys,

I have a 2005 RX-8 and the engine was replaced per the recall in January 2012. The car ran perfect and gave no indication that anything was wrong. I went to leave work about a week ago and the car would not start. I first thought it just needed a "Jump" or battary? It wouldnt even Jump off. It sounded like it wanted to start but it wouldnt turn over. I had it towed in thinking it might be the starter of something minor since I hadnt seen any red flags and the oil was changed about 2 weeks prior. The Garage tols me that I had coolant in the compression chamber and that I needed a new motor. I asked how that happened since this motor was only 9 months old and no lights or warnings. The car did not run hot or anything. The dealership said If I had purchased the motor instead of doing the reman recall replacement the I would have had a 12mo/12k warranty. However the car just tripped 100k making the extended warranty null/void. Now they want to charge me $4300 for a new engine. Do I have any recourse? if I had known i would have had a warranty I might would have paid for the new engine or sold the car shortly after the replacement. Any help or guidance is appriciated. Mazda corporate has not returned my calls.

Keep on pressuring Mazda north America I would say. I believe the engine itself has a year warranty? Or 10,000 mile warranty whichever comes first; even if you're 8 year/100k mile warranty is up. I would say look into that. I forgot if it's a year or not, you can find it on the forums if you search it on Google.

1) THERE WAS NO RECALL. You are referring to the 8 yr 100,000 mile warranty. NOT a recall. A recall is a government mandated deal that forces every car to have a specific repair made.

2) Yes, Mazda remans aren't the best quality and having early failure is certainly possible.

You are probably out of luck. I ran into the same issue when I believed I had a coolant seal failure at 11,000 miles on my reman, but now over 100k. Only 1 dealer agreed to honor the 1yr 12k warranty on service and parts, 4 other dealers denied it. Talking to MNAO, they stated that it is up to the discretion of the district manager over that dealer. They have no official policy regarding it.

GENERAL AUTOMOTIVE IS NOT FOR RX-8 discussions and issues!

Can we get this moved to the correct sub forum, please?

Paul.

Yeah there was no recall lol...

And even if they may have denied you, you should still try to fight it and get a replacement especially if you're still in the 12k mile and 1 year warranty. It might be at the dealer's discretion, but if mazda north america backed you up they can influence the dealer I'm sure. If you're in the warranty fight it, if not, then start looking into getting a rebuild or some other option.

13305 - 1978-83 GLC and 1979-82 626 Recall

11012 - 1981 RX-7 Recall

This is a direct copy and paste from Mazda's service information site, the ENTIRE recall history for Mazda, regardless of model.

And yeah, I've read the detailed information on each. None of them were an engine recall.

The only 2 involving the engine:
4206F - 2004-2006 RX-8 Reprogram PCM - Voluntary Emission Recall:
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct an Emission Recall Campaign to reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and replace the spark plugs on certain 2004-2006 RX-8 vehicles produced from April 10, 2003 through June 1, 2006. If you are a recipient of this notice, your vehicle is included in this recall.
What is the problem?
Due to PCM software calibration issues, the following conditions may result:
i) The oil-injection metering system may be inaccurate causing poor engine sealing of the combustion chambers resulting in drivability or emissions problems.
ii) Too much fuel may be injected at the time of engine start causing carbon to be deposited on spark plugs or plugs may be flooded, causing a difficult start condition. In addition, the catalytic converter may be degraded on some vehicles.
iii) (Only 2006 RX-8 vehicles are affected.) A test value indicating engine coolant temperature may be incorrectly shown on the service tool when a diagnostic function test is performed at dealership.
3305G - 2004-2005 RX-8 Thermal Damage Recall
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists
in certain 2004-2005 RX-8 vehicles produced from April 10, 2003 through July 7, 2005.
If you are a recipient of this notice, your vehicle is included in this campaign.
What is the problem?
On certain 2004-2005 RX-8 vehicles, if a RX-8 is parked and the engine is operated at high
RPMs, excessive heat build-up may affect oxygen sensors, the neutral switch and back up
lights causing MIL illumination, and exhaust emission and drivability will be adversely affected.
It may also lead to problems with the parking brake cable tube causing loss of parking brake
function, malfunctions of the gas gauge and possible damage to the fuel tank causing fuel
leaks. Fuel leakage in sufficient quantity in the presence of an ignition source could potentially
result in a vehicle fire.

He probably just meant replaced under warranty and maybe mixed it up with a recall?

Hey guys, Sorry I am new to this Forum and was not sure where I should post it. I was advised by the Dealership it was a recall, I am not an automotive person and assumed thats what it was called? Now I understand it wasn't and it was just a warranty extension. As for the motor, I am still battling the Dealership and Mazda directly. Mazda says its up to the dealership if they will honor the 12mo/12k warranty on there work. There is no written warranty on the reman engines. The dealership says I need to get Mazda to put that in writing or to agree to cover the labor. Just a lot of back and forth. They requested I provide them with the maintenance records since I have owned the car and luckily for me I kept all but one. So i provided a copy of the Credit card transaction. Hopefully this will get resolved? Mazda corporate has been awesome to deal with but the dealership have been complete ********. If anyone has or can find additional information about this issue It would help, or any ideas or how you delt with a battling manufacture and a dealership? Thanks!

Is this news?

And D_rock like I said even if according to MNAO it's up to dealer, I'm sure if they have pressure from MNAO to approve it they'll do it. I don't understand why it has to be in writing they know their warranties... They just want to make some money off of you. Check the receipt they gave you for the replacement engine it should have some info about the 1 year and 12k miles warranty on it if I'm not mistaken.
