This is a copy and paste from a new member that wanted to ask me about exhaust and mods in PMs and didn't want to post a thread in the open forum about it.
The last sent message was one I sent a few hours ago. It entirely applies in your case too:
OEM header, OEM cat, Aftermarket catback: I have never seen this combination produce more, or less, power than stock. The restriction point is still the cat.
OEM header, aftermarket catless midpipe, OEM catback: This produces about a 5-8whp gain, depending on how healthy the engine and ignition is. All midpipes produce about the same gain, because they all delete the cat and don't add any restrictions.
OEM header, aftermarket catless midpipe, aftermarket catback: This produces about the same gain as with the OEM catback. The catback is still not a restriction point.
Aftermarket header, OEM cat, OEM catback: Zero gains, OEM cat is still the restriction point
Aftermarket header, OEM cat, Aftermarket catback: Zero gains, OEM cat is still the restriction point
Aftermarket header, Aftermarket catless midpipe, Aftermarket catback: The highest possible gains, however I have never seen an actual dyno of everything together that was also on a healthy engine. Most aftermarket headers are also missing critical points of proper rotary header theory as well, which doesn't help.
I'm trying to get a bit more power from my car, but I don't want to turn to forced induction or nitrous because of the price and i would rather preserve the longevity of my engine life. I've been researching and I can't find anything. Are there any other mods worth doing for my car?
Also is there anyway to increase torque in my car?
Have you read my newbie's guide to modding? There isn't much power you can actually pull out of the RX-8 without spending BIG bucks, and any power increase will be detrimental to the life of the engine (generally speaking). Better power from going catless isn't a lifespan drop, and gaining power to the wheels by reducing drivetrain losses doesn't put any more strain on the engine.
But without an engine build, costly gearing treatments, etc... you aren't going to really be able to pass ~200whp unless you are very lucky on how well put together your engine is.
Are there any mods that you would say are great to have for the rx8? I've heard that the axialflow short shifter is great to have, but is there anything else?
MazdaEdit or Cobb AP for reflashing that allows you to block emission CELs, lower fan trigger temps, increase OMP injection, and if you care to learn to pay someone to can get tuned for a bit more optimum power from your engine.
Plus:
BHR midpipe
BHR ignition
SOHN adapter
Proper coilovers
Proper sway bars
lighter wheels than stock
coolant overflow re-route
172F thermostat
power steering connected bypassed by hard-wire
welded clutch pedal assembly
Is this a sexy list? No, not really. But they all either improve the fantastic handling of the 8 or directly remove a common failure point.

the only thing I didn't listen about is the header. my friend has an rx8 and he has an exhaust. and what do you know? his header is obx. 0 problems. have you even used one or are you just saying that cause you sound smart? I just wanted a second opinion because ive already seen how his rx8 handled it but apparently you guys just sit on here all day ready to spout off behind your computer. its not cool man. I just want help

I wasn't being an ***, but your oversensitive feelings got injured because I corrected you (appropriately) on the term mid-pipe and down-pipe. You'll get further in life if you listen to the advice of others, instead of acting like a spoiled emo who wants everything yesterday.

yeah well I think rx8 soldier is just sore that I proved him wrong about the terms. and if you guys would just help rather than be dicks. I just wanted another opinion and you guys spout off like you are experts. fine help me if you want but if not shut the hell up nobody thinks you are cool cause you can talk sh%^& behind a computer screen. your words are not law and ive been doin this for awhile too.

well im not 16. but i probly got more girls than you have in your entire life when i was 16. i dont know how you guys can have a cool car but be a complete douche bag at the same time. you would think it would balance out but evidently not. i guess ill just talk to people in the real world who actually know what they are talking about. this will free up a lot of time that i wasted on here so i can do more of that whole talking to girls thing. it may be a foreign concept to you but believe, sex with a girl is a lot better than sex with a computer. maybe someday you guys will get to try it. maybe i can act like a douchey professional like you when you guys ask me about what a vagina is
