CEL and High Pitch Sound on Cold Start
Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum so sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but I really need help with this issue.
Just a week ago my 2006 Mazda RX8 would make an interesting sound on Cold Starts and a day after that my Check Engine Light came on. I'm not sure if the sound is related to the reason why my CEL is on, but if anyone can help me out with how to fix my Check Engine Light or address this noise problem I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

That's the emissions air pump.
If you don't have emissions there is an electrical connector at the passenger side strut tower with 2 large wires....disconnect it and the pump will shut itself off
If you do...you will need a new pump...or find a good used one at a wreckers
Likely the CEL is in relation to this issue...unless you can pull the code though it is impossible for us to tell

Another new member here. I have the same high pitched noise and pulled all drive belts thinking it was belt/drive related but no luck, noise still there. I wanted to up load a picture of the connections but cannot seem to get the system to take my picture. On my 2004 there is a connector on the pump and one larger one up to it, two wires and the connector is orange right by the shock tower. I just want to know if that is the connector your talking about?

Sorry but that image will not open full size for me for some reason. I just disconnected right at the top of the pump itself. However, belts still off and pump unplugged, the noise at start up is still there, it actually does not sound as bad but today is a warmer day, so it is not staying as long, but it is still there. I am going to belt it back up and see if I can record the noise. I just need some ideas and was hoping that the air pump was it. The noise is at start up for a short time period, longer with colder temps. There is also some of that same noise on higher RPM shifts. Has anyone every encountered any starter noises?
