About an inch has fell here too today. It will be my first opportunity to try the snow tires.

It looks like it's snowing really hard outside here in camden, but there's not too much accumulation, only an inch or so, and most is blowing off the street

Close Call in today's Snow!!

Yes, I've read all of the posts warning about driving in the snow/ice on the stock 18" tires. Yes, I actually thought that I would get away with using those stock tires this winter in NJ for my daily 150mi. commute between Jackson (Ocean County) and Warren (Somerset County). Yes, I heard about the forecast for light snow today. So here I am today, driving on my merry way back home from work at around 3:30pm in the snow on my stock summer tires. Ok, everyone together now......."STUPID!!"

And of course I got myself into trouble:
I'm on 22West existing to 287South. Roads are wet and snow covered, but they really aren't that bad.....for a car with real winter tires, that is. I negotiate the snowy/icy 22West hairpin exit ramp with no problem - I take it real slow. But on the lightly snow covered straight acceleration lane on 287South after the hairpin, I start to increase my speed slowly and instantaneouly I'm in a spin. I'm completely out of control (steer into the direction of the spin, right ---ha, ha, ha, not on these tires, it doesn't matter). I skidded directly across all of the 287South lanes right across oncoming traffic - I'm figuring I'm going to get t-boned by a tractor trailer and this is the end. Somehow, nobody hit me (thank you people for not hitting me!!). I end up on the opposite side of the southbound lanes of 287, somehow stopping short of the hill on the other side - I didn't even stall the car. But now I'm perpendicular to oncoming traffic with the butt of my car sticking out into traffic and still no one hits me. Strangest thing though, traffic immediately clears within a few seconds after my spin - no oncoming cars/ trucks at all - very unusual for this part of 287. So, I back my car and my shattered nerves back onto 287S and continue the remaining 50 miles of my commute home (very, very slowly!!!).

Somebody up there was watching over me!!

When I finally got home, I gave my 2 kids and wife the biggest hug I ever gave them. And tomorrow, first thing, I'm calling Tire Rack for some winter-ready tires!!!

Moral: Don't be stupid like me - listen to the wise people on this forum and don't drive in winter conditions on the stock tires - no matter how light the snow.

My RX-8 is such a mess right now. Its this time of the season that really gets to me. All the black parts are white due to the salt, and I can only image what it looks like underneath. I hope Zaino does its job, and protects the pain for the next 6 weeks!

So why is the Winning Blue not in one of the garage's behind it?

I drove home in the light snowfall earlier this week (with OEM tires) and I have to tell you it was one of the most nerve rattling driving experiences I have ever had! By the time I got home there was too much snow to even get up the driveway into the garage. Luckily we had enough of a melt on Thursday that I was able to get her into the garage before todays onslaught. It was dumb of me to even step into the RX with the threat of snow.

Saw some horrible crash pictures of another Velocity Red on another thread ("What a difference a day makes") that was not so lucky. I had that image burned into my head the whole drive home. Glad we kept the Subaru for days like today!

Stay safe out there!

I've got too much junk behind those doors, mcmillan! I did great the other day in our inch and a half, Jon. I will try my tires out after this ends. My wife just drove up 42 to work and said it was a mess, cars all over-she's a radiology tech and has to go in no matter what. No, she's not in my8!

I have a crappy car cover on my 8, makes it easier to get the snow off! Its no fun however when the ice and moisture actually clings to the cover....worse than the snow!
