With the nice weather today I removed my front bumper to install the foglight... no more fishbowl!

I also revisited my clutch pedal, this time I completely removed it to see if the padding material was causing the bottom of my pedal to stick out farther than it should.
I didn't see anything unusual so I reinstalled the pedal... only this time I installed the bottom nut first.
Damn... now my engagement point was high on the pedal and I had to back out the push rod!
So it appears my clutch/shifting issues are gone, hopefully I didn't ruin the synchros too much.
Another lesson learned... install the bottom nut first with the clutch pedal assembly!

Steve- I'm sure Josh isn't going to have cleaner with him, so if you want to pick some up while at Summit that's cool.
I do have a can of carb cleaner... not sure how much is left.
If not no big deal, there is an Autozone nearby.

All- I have Josh's address and he usually doesn't come online until later.
So if you want his address, send me a PM and I'll give it to you.

Yes I do have a garage that we can work so we can stay dry.

Steve if you can get some cleaner at Summit that would be great and save me a trip to autozone tomorrow morning.

Jon you are right i'm not usually able to get online again until after midnight when I get out of work. If anyone else needs the address by then I'll send it out just let me know. If you need it before then go ahead and ask Jon.

See you guys tomorrow.

Nope. Axial flow is the only place to get it new and I've never seen one on ebay or anything.

You're only chance really is to hope one of the locals here is going to sell there's. I think there or 3 or 4 floating around. I just got mine a few weeks ago and its not as great as the hype in my opinion. You took a shifter that was smooth as a knife through butter and made it rifle bolt notchy.

Well... the nice thing about the AFE short shifter is that if you do buy a used one, it doesn't depreciate... so you can sell it after a week or a year for the same price... something to consider...

Really, you can try it, then sell it in literally 5 minutes on the forum.

Yea those do go fast haha. Do you have any trouble say shifting from 6th to 3rd? Some people were having trouble jumping from gears like that.

The bolt action of it doesn't let you forget what gear you are in or going to. It really is a deliberate shift. And while I do love the shorter throw...I really don't need the bolt action that might be good for someone driving during a race.

Sorry you didn't get to make it John. Thanks to everyone who came and helped out it was fun to have an Rx8 get together at my place. It put a smile on my face to see so many 8's parked in the driveway.

No problem Josh.
It was nice to have a "mini-meet" today with working on Josh's car, then heading back to my place to watch the Cavs and then a movie.
Even though this wasn't like our regular meets, it was a nice change.
Of course after several beers, a mixed drink, then Aftershock... I have a headache now.

The airbags on my daughter's '96 Bonneville (yeah, yeah, . . . she bought it without telling me) both blew up in her face last week when she turned the key part way to roll up a window after turning off the ignition, and took the windshield out as well. Fortunately it was parked at the time. Gave her a nice scrape on the side of her head, though.

I found a handful other instances on the web, some due to a corroded airbag sensor. She's got it down at O.U. so I haven't seen it. The local dealership is evidently claiming that the car was "submerged", which is not very likely since she bought it off the original owner - dad of one of her good friends.

I'm pretty sure there's no legal remedy per se due to the age of the car and the milage (~120k), and I've not found a tsb or recall related to this. I'm thinking of having her file an NTSB complaint, since it's safety related.

Any thoughts from those of you more mechanically inclined than I (i.e., nearly everyone here) re the cause?

Damn... that sucks.
Hard to say what could have caused this since there are several types of airbag crash sensors.
If the car was "submerged" and the electrical contacts were corroded, then the crash sensor wouldn't be able to complete a circuit (no airbag deployment).
Maybe (and this may be stretching it) if the car was submerged and this car has a "ball and magnet" crash sensor, and somehow the water weakened the magnet holding the ball, possibly.
But the problem with that is the "ball and magnet" type sensor is usually on a upward slant, so the force of a frontal impact has to be great enough to dislodge the ball from the magnet and move the copper ball up a tube to make the electrical connection.
Obviously, since her car wasn't moving, this theory is hard to believe.

Cars nowadays have an electronic accelerometer, so an issue with the circuit board could cause this.
If we knew the type of sensor and where its located on this car, we might be able to narrow down the possibilities.
Sorry I couldn't be much help...

you could pretty easily determine that a car was not submerged by pulling up the carpet/door skin and looking for a water line. I would demand that the dealer prove that the car was submerged at some point. They have to prove that it happened before they can just write it off much like how they have to prove that an aftermarket part caused failure.

(I'm not one of the mechanically inclined people you were looking for but had to chime in)

Machiavelli considering the cool cars you own Rx8 being number one I'm surprised your
daughter didn't consult you first I bet you could have found her a way cooler car.

I agree with you though about the car being way to old to do anything legally. Submitting a safety complaint is a good idea though so it doesn't happen to anyone else.

I used to have a Mark VIII which due to enough people fileing complaints about the car randomly bursting into flames. Something to do with the cruise control? There was eventually a recall and because of that recall my car never blew up or burst into flames or whatever was supposed to happen. So definitely file a safety complaint and save someone else.

Good luck trying to get all that worked out.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll let you know how it plays out.

Her mother (my ex) took away the car she was letting her drive because of a spat they were having. The ex likes to withhold things if she doesn't get her way (not that this was an issue while we were married ).

Anyway, out of my kids this is the independent one. She basically said "whatever" and went out and bought her own car. Unfortunately she didn't choose all that wisely.
