We had a course very friendly to our cars Sunday, as Brian, Jamie and Doc took 3 of the top 7 places in Regular Pax! Great job guys! Loads of fun.

Mid-Ohio
Doc:
Mid-Ohio was great. I have to admit, I was less than impressed with the organization of the SCCA. But I knew that going in. I was only looking for more seat time. The guy who did the classroom was great, however. I borrowed a Hero video camera for the sessions and learned a lot. In fact, I also pulled times off the video as a means of benchmarking myself. That was a revelation. In the last session I was taking 2 seconds off per lap as I started cranking things up. Still think I was only about 8/10ths, though. Finally felt very fast in the carousel and keyhole. The guy I was with gave me a real eye-opener on these when he told me they are the same...take them that way. He was RIGHT. Same line in both gets you very fast exit speeds (i.e. 75+ at the exit of the keyhole, and the same when you hit the front straight)
I also got some great advice before I went on how to take 11 into Thunder Valley. Wow....much faster line than I would have believed. Put the Apex curb right under your car and drive right through the dirt!!! If you check Videos, all the fastest cars were doing it. They were right. It is also very smooth and does not upset the car. It gives you a much more balanced landing on the downhill, and will allow you to keep your wheels straight when you unload the car.
However, I did have my first experience with the tires going away. We got a 25 min. session at the end and the tires were good for a bit less than 20. After that, they decided "pushing" was the way to go. Wow. I have no idea how I kept lap times up during this since the push was bad, and the car got very slippery.
All of the folks there felt pretty bad, when one of the guys in the B class decided to bounce his BMW roadster off of a tire wall during a Cool-Down lap. It was ugly for the instructor from what I heard since this was the cool-down. They bounced him out after that. The guy had several folks helping him with tools and duct tape to get his car driveable for the way home. He damaged his entire front and passenger side. I do not know for sure where it happened, but from the video, it looks to have been between 10a-10b. There were tire tracks leaving the tarmac, and there was a tire wall dead ahead. I would not want that for ANYONE.
I stopped by your office last Thursday since I took the day off. But it was uninhabited (Except for UPS Stickers on the window). I wanted to know if you were interested in the Shifter is all. I took it out before I went down to Mid-Ohio.
The name is Doug, by the way.
Headed to Watkins Glen in 3 weeks. I am pumped about that one.

Hey Doug. Glad you had a good time there.
I get really confused about lines there. Every instructor has a different line. I'd love to see a video of the lines you took. If they're better, I'm all in.
Not sure about going onto the dirt though. That seems a little questionable to me.
What tires are you using?

i'll try and come in for it but i gotta see whats goin on "socially" that weekend on campus.
i also started taking my car up here too
i couldnt just let her sit at home. even though i have to park it 2 miles away from my dorm, i did find another rx-8, another red one that looks pretty much stock except for a HUGE wing on the back. that brings the total count to 3 if you include mine.
haha and in my engineering class i have to do a report on an engineering discovery and the history of it...im doin the rotary engine

I just questioned the location, not the time/date discussed. And I proposed an alternative! Its not like I just posted "No."
That should be fun. When you're done, I want to know why after 41ish years of mazda rotary engines, they still flood.

I don't really care where we meet because I'm only going to hang out with friends.
So food selection was never a concern for me (though good "scenery" to look at is a plus).

Send me your email address. I shot video of this trip, and will be happy to send you some. I trimmed 1 lap out and it's about 12MB. I will have to send it via FTP. It is not the lap I was in the dirt very far, but it shows the line I was running.
