DB, I have some spare intake parts and may have that if you need it.

 

Just trying to figure out which part Jon wanted me to unplug to do the vfad mod quickly and easily.

 

So I read Jon's post in the DIY and it has led me to have more questions.



1) Could one just turn around the one way check valve to do the same thing, or if I just disconnect at the check valve wouldn't it do the same function?
2) If I were to cap the check valve instead of the intake manifold would it be a problem?
3) Could I just disconnect the air line from the vacuum chamber to the solenoid and not cap anything?

 

Just remove the tube connected to the vacuum chamber and not from the throttle body and you shouldn't have to cap anything. If you remove it from the throttle body that's where you'll create a vacuum leak (which is what mine had since I removed the entire assembly).

I would still say you are better off removing from the throttle body and capping the nipple on the throttle body since then you're not relying on the one-way check valve (which still could let unscreened air / water in but shouldn't let air leak out) but I doubt that's a big risk and shouldn't affect your throttle response at all. I mean the goal here is to reduce wasted energy pulling in un-filtered air by vacuum. Your vacuum would still seem to be able to pull air through that tube if it's still connected which won't give you exactly what you're after.

Does that make sense?

 

So if I understand things right from Jon. The vacuum comes from the manifold side to close the VFAD. By disconnecting the vacuum tube the VFAD remains open. So the only thing would be the possibility of sucking up water and unfiltered air like you said. Which is why I thought about capping the valve as it is a lot easier for me to get my big *** hands on than the intake manifold.

 

as Ryan alread stated....

Pull the line circled in red and put a cap on the nipple. Done. It is the easiest and most hassle free way to do it. Plus the only thing you have to remove in order to do this is your engine cover, everything is easily accessable.

Your hands aren't much bigger then mine. It's not your hands, it's your man ***** that are getting in the way.

There is plenty of room there to sqeeze even a big fat sausage hand in there. If you don't feel like messing with it, then I'll do it at the autocross on Sunday. (assuming you will be back from indy in time for it)

 

You're right John. The vacuum connection to the manifold, just past the throttle body, is pulling air from the VFAD. The VFAD itself switches on/off depending on RPM to reduce intake noise so the VFAD itself is determining when the vacuum is pulling air from the front bumper where the VFAD gets it's air stream.

If you pull the hose from the VFAD side the hose will continue drawing air from the vacuum continuously and would no longer change depending on the VFAD RPM switch.

By pulling the hose at the manifold and capping that nipple (shut it, Dozer ) you completely eliminate air flow changes from the VFAD assembly and will only be relying on the intake box itself to provide all air to your engine.

Big or little hands. It's very accessible.

Aren't you going to Eastlake on Sunday? Make him do it for you. Problem solved and you can bitch about him if he screws it up (which he won't because this is so easy but piece of mind...).

Well... on a side note for drinking... just laid off another 7 people at work and cut hours across the board... mine included... so I am all about having a beer!

Thinking of a solution to the VFAD from a pneumatics side of it instead of just going along with what everyone else does.
I love when people think outside the box.
And everything mentioned was pretty spot on...... I applaud!

BUT, even though you CAN run with just the hose disconnected and rely on the one-way check valve, it'll be easier to just cap the nipple behind the throttle body.
I know you can run with it just disconnected because I did it and ran for several months without any issues


But you still need to "bleed off" the vacuum in the line, so disconnecting the hose on the solenoid (from the actuator side) should be good enough.

And just in case people are questioning the theory of removing vacuum from the line to keep the valve open, remember when I made a video showing how to acutate a valve using a hand pump?
I did this on the VFAD and you'll notice it requires 10psi of vacuum to CLOSE the valve and it remained open until then:

Finally got my car back. 8 hours for them to do an exterior detail and it is *****! How can you spend 8 hours on a car and not claybar it? It makes no sense. *sigh*

 

I spent 6 hours on mine last Sunday and I bet it looked better than yours.

I will wash it again on Saturday because the stupid rain already makes it look only so-so.

Oh and I finally used the Borla exhaust cleaner. Eh. Lame. Old English was significantly better. I'd say the Borla is on par with most of the ones you can get at Walmart. They're all pretty good but not quite capable of making it look brand new.

Just wax it yourself. You don't even have to get dirty for that.

 

I didn't feel like spending 8 hours on it doing it right. If it wasn't for Tyler backing out last second I wouldn't have had to go to these jackasses. He was doing a full claybar and triple wax job too. I'll give it to him in a month after it looks like ***** again for Midohio.
