What is the problem with Steve's midpipe btw? Other than the hole he put in it with the plasma cutter that makes it loud and the heat sheild rattling like a SOB.

Steve just regrets getting it and kicks himself for not listening to me when I told him he won't like it.
Maybe when we were popping flames at the Lizard, he was jealous for having the smallest one.

Again... how you mod your car depends on how you are going to run it.
Then others just care about being "Fast & Furious".
Everyone has different goals.
Jon, it's not about driving around cones at all. You keep bringing that up. That's absolutely not true.

I think if you are going to compete. Or drive at a track, or something beyond just going down the road grocery shopping, I can understand: AFTER you learn to drive the car.

There just seems to be an assumption on this forum that you "have to" modify the car. A guy in a stock RX8, who knows how to DRIVE, will beat a modified 8 on any course, track, straightaway, etc. if the mod car driver doesn't know how to use the car.

I will give you your props. YOU know more about this car than 99% of the people of this whole forum. You do things thoughtfully and with intent. Too many do it just because they think they "ought to."

So then once it's done, and shows minimal gains, why do people keep doing it.

Jon, your statement here agrees with me. There are minimal gains for the mods, yet new owners rush out to "improve" the car, never even utilizing the true potential of the car.

I've got no problem with you wanting to improve the car. YOU know more than most people and do it with Knowledge and intent. MOST people here just add this stuff HOPING it does something. Then they brag about it.

Kinda like I love Guiness and you don't?????? I respect different goals. I just don't see the other goals. That's what I'm trying to understand. What is the goal? Beyond more HP to go faster? Improved fuel economy, maybe (good luck with that). You like the sound? OK. But call it "I like that sound better", not a performance enhancement.

Most of the 'performance' mods that people on the forum who just do daily driving end up making your drive more fun. It's not so much horsepower as the sounds and feel that are slight changes but end up being big improvements. And some of it is just matching the sound with the experience you are already having.

And for most people who are into the car enough to get on this forum the car is more than just a vehicle to get from point A to point B. And even more than just getting from A to B as fast as possible. It's a possession that you have the ability to make (relatively) unique to you which makes it that much more valueable.

The real mod I'd like to see is something that gave the car some torque. More HP only helps so much there.
Well I'm sure Jon would be the first to say you can't have one without the other (heh) but if you really want more torque the best mod would be to get the 09 transmission with the different gear ratios. Supposedly they have managed to get a little better feel of torquiness but not a lot of people with 04-08s have been in an 09. Beyond that just add the HP and accept the minimal gain in torque.

But -I- don't want more torque. When I'm on the track the car doesn't need torque as long as I'm driving the car right. And when I'm not the last thing I need is so much torque the car goes somewhere I'd prefer it didn't go.

But the car sounds better and it is possible that he might pass an echeck without putting the stock cat back on...which I thought was the point. Yea...sometimes I would love to pop some flames at a red light to the asshat behind me...but I could live with just having the sound.

I keep bring it up FATHER because you keep bring up Auto-x and how the mods won't benefit there... which I agree 100%.

And again.. I agree with you. But when someone decides they "have" to, its good to have people who have been through it, tested it, ran with it, to tell these people not to waste their money and to spend it else where.

Not sniping but that's only a great attitude for AutoX and power mods. Suspension mods, PCM mods, gauges, wheels, brakes, etc. are helpful at the track and on the street. All of those give you the ability to control your car better and keep your car from getting jacked up.

And the debate about learning to drive on an unprepared car verse a prepared car around cones doesn't weight heavily on the additional safety/control associated with a prepared car. It does at 130 miles per hour down the back straight with a car in front and behind you.

Well put.

And Charles helped me to say it the correct way, "I would be more interested if there was an increase in torque across the RPM band than peak h.p. with a given product."

I am able to come down tonight to help. I will eat dinner with the family and call you all up and see if you are still working on it.

I think Jon gets what I want to do to the car as well as WHY I want to mod it. The car is going to be a toy. Modding it is just for my pleasure not for whoopin' ***. I will want to eventually run AutoX and maybe a 1/4 mile or two, but where I place will not matter to me much as I just go to have fun. This thing is going to be the second biggest money pit next to my house, accpet I will enjoy it a lot more.

Not real surprising. Just flooded. Now Steve won't need to call for help when he does it again. Which he will.

Yup.... used the washer fluid again to de-flood the engine.
I really love this technique.

That tends to happen when Jon gets his hands on Billy Joe Bob Frankie Steve's car.

btw...you should brush up on your deflooding process. At some point you will need it.

The method i was tought to use on my rx7's was to pour hmm what was it. I think it was power stearing fluid into the intake manny through a large rubber tube at the top. It made a fantastic smoke screen.

Edit: Here is my new kid.

Edit Edit: What all is going on with yall for new years eve tomorrow?

Might be a little tough to get power steering fluid from an RX8 into the engine.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you said but you didnt take it from the RX you bought it and poured it from the bottle

But yeah I was looking at it and it appears difficult to just pour something down its gullet.

What I was getting at was the RX8 doesn't have power steering fluid... since its electric.
Windshield washer fluid is the best to use since its contents are alcohol and soap.
We just squirt it into the maintenance ports on the intake manifold.
