I finally remembered to ask this Jeff....

I have the current (well, Fall last year) custom tune for a NA, Cali.

My radiator fans run for about 5 seconds after shutting down; never more, never less.

It hasn't been extremely hot here and my coolant is rarely over 190 degf, but I had thought the tune extended the run time of the fans regardless.

My understanding from reading this thread was that the fans ran until 180F which is lower than the stock temp which is why they "run longer".

Well then I have an issue since mine shut off prior to coming down to 180 degf.

Again mine run about 5 seconds after shutdown every time.

btw: I'm sure I have my latest custom tune loaded - perhaps Jeff can double check mine when he gets a rare moment?

The tune causes the fans to turn on at earlier temperatures. I could be wrong but last I checked it was something like 185 degrees for Fan A, and then 195 for Fan B which is the secondary fan.

There is no direct control over the amount of time the fans run after the car has been shutdown.

Except to turn the key back to the "on" position and then "off" again. That's what I do when I don't want the fans running all day.

Thanks Gents. So as I now understand it, the fans turn on earlier with Jeff's tune (at a lower hot coolant temp) but aren't tune-controlled to run any longer after shutdown. I can live with that as even on a rather hot/humid day yesterday I was only about 192 degf at fan shutdown and about 15 minutes later I was around 180 degf (shaded/open garage).

Yes but from a tuning aspect there is no direct control with the fans after the car shuts off.

Something has to shut them off once the tune turns them on and the car is turned off though.

It probably is a factor of the hysteresis but there is no direct table that keeps the fans on until X temperature except regarding the car when it is running. Speaking to Jeff, he stated that the fans might run longer depending on the amount of time you spend above a certain temperature.

I guess that makes sense since the PCM would have no power once you shut the car off so it can't really cut them off. There must be some other system in place that doesn't require the power load that the PCM would to handle shutting them off at a certain temp.

Perhaps,

Either way, the system that is in place works fine for the needs of the car and there's no reason that it needs to be changed.

i'm thinking of something that actually improves cooling.

I hear the butch-hacktards are making something nice.. might have to check into that.

Historically a thermistor or bi-metallic t'stat kept the fans on after shutdown until a preset lower coolant temperature was reached. Considering the ignition is off and therefore presumably also the ECU I guess it was pretty dumb of me to think it was a potential tune-set parameter.

'course in the ol' days of fan belts if the engine wasn't running neither was the fan, but the electric run-after-shutdown fans(s) was implemented to better protect the engine and cooling system etc. from latent heat.

My car doesn't have a cruise control. If i buy a steering wheel with the buttons(and of course access port), will it be possible to set up the ECU so that I get a cruise control?

Resubmit your calibration requests. Both of you. Tell 'em I said it was okay.

hello Jeff

mine was received on 5 /29/2010 ,and got a confirmation e-mail saying that my submission and all answers and data logs look correct.
i had read the AccessPORT Instructions .it mentions that ""Provided you have followed the directions correctly, you should receive an adjusted calibration within 10 business days, Monday through Friday after receiving your confirmation e-mail. "

i did not get any adjusted calibration yet.i just want to fellow up.

THANK YOU

Im right there with ya man except I submitted a week earlier. And while the automated response says 10 business days the email that I got, from whomever is filtering the emails from the BHR crew, said "We will be working as quickly as possible to complete your calibration but times do vary. As such, we do not currently have the means to identify how long the process will take." It is really hard to deal with having no information on where things are or where they are going but I know that eventually Jeff will get around to it. My only hope is that I can still get my tune finished before it starts to snow again.
