I hope you're right. This is the 3rd or 4th reminder. I asked for a tweaked map at the end of May.

I'm don't really understand what is going on in your calibration, Jack.
It just looks like a vacuum leak from here.

I don't get it. I've checked all vacuum hoses on the intake portion, and all of them were tight. I'll check again as soon as the engine bay is cool enough to work in.

An another note, a vacuum leak really doesn't explain why the engine goes pig rich (11.1) at around 5,700 rpm and then comes back a little at 7,600rpm...unless the secondary ports aren't opening. A stuck port really shouldn't be the problem since it's a brand new engine with only ~8,000 miles on it.

Actually, it does.
You are running the 5a calibration, which adds 10% to the MAF.
At idle, where a vacuum leak is most noticeable, you need that 10% correction to make up for the unmetered air.
However, at higher loads and RPMs, the 10% is just adding a ton of fuel when it isn't needed.

Hey Jeff,

If I bought an AP from you, can I request/purchase custom maps from you? You see..., I am interested in experimenting with a midpipe, but at the same time, I wish to stay competitive in AutoCross in Stock class, which does not allow midpipes.

I'm planning to put in on and off. What kinda prices can I expect for something like that?

Ahhh, got it.

I suppose a good way to test that theory is to flash the "0" calibration and see how my AFR reacts. If the numbers are better, then I get to spend a day checking everything under the hood for leaks.

Thanks for the input.

Jeff, how much longer do you anticipate it will be before you get to my e-mail? It's been three weeks so I'm a little concerned. Please let me know if I need to email you anything else.

I might be interested in ordering one of these things. Do I just purchase direct from the Cobb site, or is there a better option?

purchase from the cobb website if you think you'll be happy with the stock map they supply.

purchase from mazdamaniac.com if you want tuned maps for your application (FI included)

So I assume that if my car is bone stock, it won't really matter where I purchase from, but if I should add a cold air intake or midpipe, etc., then I'd be better off with mazdamaniac?

I wouldn't assume that. Everyone's car does not respond the same. You are definitely better off getting it from MM as he provides a matrix of maps to get you dialed in for your particular car.

No one map will work out of the box for everyone. You take a huge risk by ordering through cobb since you won't know how well the map works for you, and you will not be able to have any changes made to the map (like increasing omp flow rates, or changing radiator fan temps).

Also if you buy from cobb, you will not be able to get support from Mazdamaniac afterward. You either buy from him or you don't. The price is the same either way, so there isn't any gains to go elsewhere.

Thank you mysql, I'd really like to get the AP from MM when it's fiscally appropriate for me =)

What's the best way to handle dyno tuning? I mean, can I find a reputable shop in socal and have them tune for best power on a dyno with the cobb AP? I'd guess that would work...

Or could I book some dyno time and have someone from rx8club come help me out?

Just not sure what the best way to go is...

If you buy it directly from Cobb, its likely it will be essentially a paperweight.
I have yet to see more that one or two cars work with their provided map.

Point well taken, but I've never dyno'ed my car and wouldn't know where to go where I'd get someone to work with me, so short of doing that, how would I know how well my particular map was working on my particular car?

BTW, I'm located in the Balto/Wash area (actually Balto to be more specific).

you drive it, follow the MM directions and if you need adjustments, you can talk to Jeff to make changes. It's even better if you can log your car information (such as afrs) and he can remotely use that to redo the map if required.

Cool. So I can get the full benefit of the AP without any dyno's.
