Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to black out the background of the ****, as previously displayed in the photoshopped images?

 

yea i dont really like the carbon fiber look in the center either, but the knobe looks really good. i think it would be great if the middle would be piano black or real carbon fiber. so i think i would either paint the middle part black which will match the interior panel of the car or insert a small sheet of real carbon fiber in there. but the problem is that the RX8 logo would be gone. so ill see when i receive the knobe.

 

I know this is gonna sound kinda stupid, and i dont know much about paint. But what kinda paint would work best?

 

Check it out... I did this in MS Paint! haha, anyway... here's the non-rotor bits "covered" in piano-blackish pixels. I may just have to do this. I'm fine with the faux carbon fiber though...

The most important thing is to lay down some primer before putting down color.

I did mine but sadly forgot to put primer down it'll chip no matter what type of paint is used (except powder coating, but 400 degrees is probably too much for the plastic inserts that the light is directed through).

Second thing is to tape off the middle so the plastic inserts don't get discolored.

 

cant wait till i get mine so i can make some plan on how to make it look as good as possible. if i actually make it look good, i would definitely post the pics. but i would consider painting it though...

you could try a marks-a-lot or sharpie!

 

If you all ask me… If you want the base a permanent color other that the chromed aluminum look, I’d pay the extra $10 or $15 to have it anodized in the color you want. Aluminum is NOT friendly to paint and in order to paint it you need to wash primer it and the mixture is very strict and unforgiving. Even then there is NO assurance that it will not crack and peel over time. Just like colored Lug-nuts etc… they use Anodization for it reliability and ability to weather well. My .02.

 

anodizing would look pretty awesome, powder coating might be another option. A buddy of mine who's into old school bmx bikes has several aluminum frames that are powdercoated and they look fabulous Hold up pretty welll too

 

where would you take them to have them anodized?

Too much time and effort for a $25.00 mod. I'm going to leave it as is, probably looks fine matching the silver trim.

 

I'm gonna try the primer / black paint method. I'll post pics when its done.

I tried just the black paint but when I pull the painters tape from the rotor part it peeled up. Just gotta be more careful this time.

So does this mean that there is no way to get them anodized black by Vice_grip? It looks like mine is in the mail, but I definitely want to paint mine black, but I don't want it to look like crap (which it probably will if I do it myself).
