not to nitpick, but that wasn't the z06 at the autoshow in motion. it was the regular the "regular" c6 vette. (i drove it too and loved it).
...and it's not nippicking, a C6 is significantly different beast under the hood.

But really, I wasn't knocking the ZO6 because it's better than anything Ford has to offer within $50k of it's sticker price. I do think the FORD GT is a higher quality build......but it's expected at $150K sticker price.....not to mention it's mostly assembled by Saleen.
My biggest complaint about the ZO6 quality is just that it seems worse than the base C6 which I thought was a pretty solid car.

EDIT: here's a link to car and drivers write up of the "headache" that is the GT...I know it's off topic I just thought I'd point it out. At Ford, a Supercar Delivers a Super Headache

Do you remember how much red you could see on the tach?? The tach on the normal C6 has a bunch of red colored ticks, while the tach on the Z06 I sat in last September only had the last one or two colored red because of its higher redline. It was the first thing I noticed when I sat down.

I believe Porsche just won most unreliable car recently. When people talk about intangibles they're mostly talking about perceptions. Everyone I've known who owned a Porsche couldn't stand the maintenance. A friend wanted to sell me his. I wasn't interested. The perception is that America can't do it right and that the Corvette is really nothing more than a muscle car, not a world class sports car. I think it leans more towards the latter. Sure they're things that can be improved but in the case of the Z06, it can take on a Ferrrari, Lamborghini, etc. and give it a run for the money.
The biggest problem with the Corvette is that it's a Chevy. Chevy dosen't invoke much emotion when thinking of things like quality, panache, exclusivity, refinement, all things that would elevate the Corvettes image. The Caddillac XLR, even in V form is more of a cruiser than a pure sports car. Caddillac should perhaps offer a hardtop version that's lighter and based of the Z06 chassis but adding even more luxury and power, really pushing the supercar aspect.
The real issue is that American car companies haven't been spending the last few decades elevating their image but have been doing the exact opposite. America has become synonymous with lukewarmness. This doesn't just pertain to our cars but our workforce as a whole.
