"bu bu bu but the economy, no way toyota is going to make a affordable sports car."
who ever said that, i have news for you

Toyota and Subaru have been collaborating for some time on a jointly developed sport coupe model. Now, we get a preview of the FT-86 Concept, which is set to debut at the Tokyo motor show later this month.
The sport coupe's dimensions are fairly compact with a length of 4,16 meters and a height of 1,26 m (width and wheelbase are 1,76 and 2,57 meters, respectively) and a low center of gravity. The FT-86 was created by Toyota's Europe Design Development and it's objective was to fashion a car with a "functional utility" design theme.
Uncharacteristic for the times, this concept does not feature any new technology of the hybrid or electric kind. The goal for both Japanese automakers was to create a sports model that is simple, fun-to-drive and fuel efficient. The FT-86 will feature Subaru's 2.0 liter Boxer gasoline/petrol engine, which develops only 160 hp, although, there have been hints that it may be dialed up to about 200. It also uses a 6-speed manual transmission and ADVICS brakes.
We can only guess that the FT-86's agility and speed will come from a low curb weight. We will just have to wait for the numbers on that.

All I see is a 350z in the front. But the fact that it's going to be built is good enough for me.
It's a 2L boxer engine from Subaru. 160HP pfffttt, I'm sure that won't mean much to owners of this car when they figure things out.

It looks pretty good. I assume this is the fabled toyoberu. Looks better then anything toyota had made in years. The brakes look cool and just like the brakes on my R6. Anyway, lightless is more important then power but even if it is light 160hp is not enough. How long before the ej25 gets stuffed in there? Hopefully not too long cuz that would be a potent killer of a car.

this looks great. it's supposedly built off the impreza platform and powered by the same ej whatever flat 4. if they can kick it in at the same price as the hyundai genesis, this'll be real sweet. the best part, tho, may be that cars like this may push mazda to produce something like the kabura

Hm, Jalopnik said 200-250hp? It's a 2.0L Boxer engine in the Toyota version, no info yet on the Subie version...

I really like that side profile. Very nice lookin.
Even if did come with only 200 hp, I think that would be great for a sports car. If it is lightweight, it would be a fun car for sure. (3000lb max)

Being an AE86 owner myself, I'm glad to see The Brand Of Bland finally coming out with something exciting. Had I not bought an RX-8 earlier this year, I would probably be saving what money I could scrounge (it's expensive keeping the old Corolla running) for one.
Also, per Edmunds.com's Inside Line, the FT-86 will supposedly get Subaru's next-gen 2.0L, so I'm a bit more optimistic on the 200hp mark.
I like the styling. It's a bit too aggressive, but I'm sure it'll be toned down in the production model. I am not a fan of dual exhausts on a FOUR-CYLINDER! I like the driver-oriented instruments and controls, but there's a bit too much style for style's sake (c'mon, zippers?). Like the exterior, I'm sure this will be toned down in the production model.
I assure you, however good this car could or will be, I will not be trading up the 8 for it.

The rumor I've heard is that it is Toyota that'll bring it to NA while Subaru sells their version in Japan.

out of all my friends in japan, me and another friend out of 25, went with mazda (after our graduations of trueno, carina, and levins) the rest went went nissan.
Now that was back in early to mid 90’s. but after AE86, there is no car to move to the next Toyota.
AE100 is FF, AE 101 is FF. only thing FR was supra, chaser, mark2, but with drifting, supra is nice but expensive also. Chaser and mark 2 are nice, but its more like if you want to be in pimp mode , but also want to drift.
Which is why FC, and S13-S14 are so popular there. If Toyota had a car was TC ,FR during the early –mid 90's, I would of gotten one over a FC. Because one AE100 is a nice looking car for its time.
but going with FF since 1992 was a dumb move by Toyota. All the ppl who owned AE86 went to Nissan. So i see toyota going with FT86 for japan, especially if nissan decides to make a new silvia. AE86 is a good starter car, but its nothing special. which is why i am amazed how overly hyped this car is in the US.
