That depends on how you define a sports car. Even if we say that's true, there are still plenty of FWD cars that are just as fast, handle just as well, and are just as fun to drive as many RWD 'sports cars'.

Now that is also very true... but those ones that are FWD are usually a ECONO box based platform

And? Does the fact that it's an econobox platform somehow detract from the fun that can be had in it?

My ITR was based on an econobox or sorts with numerous chassis and drivetrain upgrades. It has received global accolades for it's fun to drive factor. This was written in 2007 after a best drivers of all time car group test in EVO magazine:

‘It’s a car as sweet and all-consuming as any I’ve experienced at any price, and as pure and focused in its own way as any Porsche RS. Forget the accolade of greatest front-wheel-drive car. The Integra Type-R ranks as one of the truly great drivers’ cars of any kind.’
I certainly wouldn't kick it out of bed because it's FWD and based on a mass produced chassis.

we stopped by the local vw dealer w/ a bunch of the new gti's. i really like 'em, especially the 5-door ones w/ the 18" rims and plaid seats. HOWEVER, the cheapest one on the lot was $27k! the one stick (non-dsg) one was a 2-door and it was $30k. that's crazy! back when the golf v gti came out, i drove one and it was ~24k and basically loaded, and i liked it a lot. i like the new ones (which are just facelifted) a lot too, but i'd have to be really stupid/insane to pay $30k for one

It's too bad they don't sell the scirocco here. Sharp car. Though everytime I see one, I can't help but remember the Top Gear episode where they were trying to make a Volkswagon ad for the diesel scirocco. hilarious.

my thoughts on this thread:

lets leave the homos alone. if it werent for them, we wouldnt have a lot of nice things. and they dont contribute to over population. its like win win.

the golf will always be a girly car imo. the r32 is ok, but i still wouldnt drive it.

the ITR is more a "liftback" than a hatchback.

sirocco ftw.

There's always been a place for "hot hatches" from the 80's GTI on, say a young family man with a penchant for a little spirited motoring fun when solo. But no matter how good the performance (and the WRX and Evo are exceptional) at the end of the day, they're still hatchbacks.

If the scirocco was a US model i would have one, love it, hell i would consider the '10 GTI (or R20 thats supposed to come.)

BTW if you are worried about looking "girly" in a car you have more important issues to address

And the Miata is somewhat based on the Elan. Full circle.

well the miata was based on the original elan of the 60s, not the m100 elan of the 80s, which was a very odd sports car, especially from lotus, but i love it

i don't think rwd necessarily defines a sports car (tho most are). in fact, most of what you'd call sports cars are actually strictly speaking gt's. anyway, just because a car is fwd doesn't mean it can't be properly high performance and/or fun to drive. this debate ended a LONG time ago. if you still blankly dismiss a car just 'cuz it's fwd in this day and age, it's time to crawl out of your hole

And there we have it. The be-all, end-all final word. I kid... "Looks" like a van, I can understand, but what exactly makes a vehicle "feel" like a van?

I go in Saturday for an oil change, I hope there's one on the showroom floor so I can at least put my hands on it and *** in it (hope to be gone before the sleazy salesmen show up).

As long as some of you are being ****, here is a picture of three hatchbacks:

Three more hatchbacks:

(the C5 is a convertible; imagine it as a hardtop for argument's sake)

None of those are what come to mind when someone says hatchback; and neither is an Integra/RSX or Scion TC, or anything else in the "Coupe with a glass trunk" category.

All that being said, I can appreciate the GTI because it's a good looking, well made car. I appreciate the MS3 because it's fast and supposedly can handle decently. I considered trading in my RX-8 for an MS3 once I first saw the insurance and gas bills I was racking up, but it just wouldn't be the same.. Aesthetically and performance-wise, I don't think I'd be able to make the switch. This is me being vain, but I like having a trunk, and when people see the RX-8 they consider it a "nice" car, not just some hatchback with a big exhaust. I've never driven an FWD fast, but I like my RWD 50/50 too much to try it out.

Oh, and one more thing: 9300 RPM!

More than that, if you consider what it would cost to trade to a MS3 over a paid off RX-8, and compare the gas savings, you won't own the MS3 long enough to get a ROI.

This is true, but I used the wrong terminology; I would have been looking to trade or sell my used RX-8 (which I got a great deal on) for a used MS3, not trading in to a dealership for a new car. I got the RX-8 cheaper than any MS3 I've ever seen listed, so I'd be upgrading based on money I never even spent. All this is moot, though, since I'm not gonna do that. Besides, insurance and fuel consumption in a car with more horsepower than mine wouldn't have saved me much anyway. I'm getting around 18mpg now since I drive more freeway; I just hated it when I was getting killed with 15mpg all city.

Big windows, crappy turning radius, lots of body roll
