What do you guys think of this?

This guy came out two discoveries that might change the efficiency of the rotary engine.

Wow, VERY interesting, seems perfectly logical and makes sense for sure. You have to wonder why Mazda, who have been developing this concept for over 40 years hasn't thought of these ideas but sometimes I guess, the best ideas ARE the simplest.

lol yea, the halfassed spot weld bathtub.

I cannot go into more detail obviously, but there are 'some' companies that specialize in rotary aircraft that have a similar bathtub design.

You just need to remember that aircraft and the such are made for sustained high rpms, while the automotive rotor design helps both low rpm and high rpm applications. Which is something that the video doesn't consider.

His observations on the plug holes being too large holds true, as I believe that has always been a solid point in the loss of combustion power, but the issue there is that as you make the plug hole smaller, the magnitude of the spark flame decreases. I think OD (maybe?) tried to demonstrate this. Ideally one would have to use a "laser" ignition source.

Hey alex, I thought the same thing a couple of months back and asked about it.
Someone posted the link to the discussion that took place when it first came out.
It was news to me too.
Some other new member will probably ask about it again down the road.

Has anyone got any word on what mazda is working on now and if it incorporates any of this?

While Mazda's CEO (I think?) has said that they will always be working on the rotary as long as he is around, nothing has been definitely confirmed in terms of when the next rotary car will come out (lots of tumors about a 2017 RX7 but nothing official from mazda), what it will be like (again, rumors suggest an increase in displacement for a longer stroke and better torque as well as the "laser spark plugs" - something of which I have absolutely no clue how they would/do work), or price.

I have a rotor out of a 20A on my desk next to me, and mazda was clearly aware of this "revolutionary" idea to make the "combustion chamber" (for lack of a better word) asymmetrical and off centered back in the 80's.

EDIT: Corrected typo.

The "this" you are referencing to I am assuming is what is in the video? It's all been tried, and discarded or advanced upon. It's like a back yard model rocket guy going to NASA with an idea of how to ballast their rockets differently, and showing them a model created by sticking popsicle sticks together with elmers glue.

There has been comments by the upper Mazda guys that there is a Sky-R in the company (As opposed to the Sky-D and Sky-G engines), and there was separate word that they are targeting 2017 for the next rotary release.

However, these comments are far far far short of an actual production model. Mazda will release something when they are ready, and everything you see before then it just rumor mongering from people that are living in either dreamy clouds of neverland or the burning fires of hatred.

I love the out of the box thinking this guy has and do believe he's on the right track.

I do not run trailing on my rx7 as I have found it pointless while using a msd on leading.
I want to completely eliminate the trailing plug hole to help with emissions and low end compression.

I believe the leading hole could be smaller but would need to be open in a way not to trap carbon.

This guy isn't on to anything. This "discovery" is not only old, it was rejected in the early 1970's. There are several SAE papers on it. How does this crap keep popping back up here every year?
