That's a bit of apples and oranges there. The Evo MR will be an automatic sedan while the STi will be a manual hatch. People looking to get a lot of power for cheap while maintaining their warranty are going to be deciding between an STi and Evo RS rather than an MR.

And there's no way an MR has an MSRP of $38k unless you're adding in every option including NAV.

MSRP for a current Evo MR is already a little over 35k. With the belief that all trim levels are going to increase by 2k it's not going to take many options to get it damn close to 40k. Also, the GSR should be around 33k and will be the closest competition to the STI price wise and the RS should be cheaper than any STI available. That is assuming they still have the 3 trim models for the USDM.

any idea what USDM STi's power levels? I doubt we will get the 2.0l twin scroll after sampling a larger displacement engine.

If you believe what's been written, the MR won't exist. The GSR will be the top model and just have multiple options.

I still will be surprised if the base price of any model Evo is $38k. I also don't doubt that you could option together one for almost $40k, though.

That puts the price point near BMW territory, and a whole slew of other cars these boy racers didn't cross swords with before. In any case, both of these cars have pretty gruesome styling IMO. But that is in the eye of the beholder. Especially with one eye.

Speaking of BMW, I was reading about the new 1 series they'll be bringing in soon. The 135i features a twin turbo 3 litre. Got good write ups. Should make this segment a little more interesting.

I like everything from the hood back.....the new front from the top of the fog lights up is horrid.....now if it looked like this, sign me up. Sorry if the chop is a little rough, I only had ms paint to work with.

The idea that people may be cross-shopping the 135i, STi, and Evo is bizarre. I mean, I understand why they may do so, I just never would have seen it coming a few years back.

An 06 evo MR MSRP including destination is: $36,924. If we expect a 1-2k increase you have 38-39k. I admit that the GSR with the 5 speed manual is more of a match for the STI most likely.

Why not shop a 135 vs the others? I shop based on performance and price, doesn’t really matter the brand. In the future I’ll be shopping a Camaro, 135i, Evo (sportback I hope) and hopefully a Kabura/RX7 and maybe even a supra.

I think they appeal to the same or similar demographic. The BMW has it's own appeal, though- no plastic tack ons- brand value

Think about what you're saying though. The same person who is shopping for a BMW is looking at a Mitsubishi. I understand that it's all about performance and price, but I still think most people would say it's a very odd combo given the stereotypes of these two brands.

In the end, the top-end Evo (MR or whatever they call it) has the SST transmission. That one option right there makes it such a different car than the STi or 135i.

BMW resisted the idea of bringing in their lowest price offerings tothe US because of what might happen to their brand image here. It is thought Jaguar suffered somewhat from this when they brought over the X type. Mercedes took a similar risk with the C-class, with middling results.

But the new coupe is quite sporty, and at least doesn't look tacky. It provides an opportunity where it did not exist before for this market slot. It's also dangerous- it could steal sales from the higher margin cars sitting on the same showroom floor.

Have a look- I think this car could definitely steal sales from the current Japanese offerings

The SST trans in the MR is not an automatic, it's an automated manual trans which is not the same thing. Not only does it achieve better mileage than the 5 spd manual, in the softest mode it will run as smooth and seamless as an automatic, in the super sport mode it will outshift Michael Schumacher, plus you have the option to manually shift sans clutch pedal via the steering wheel paddle shifter or through the shifter itself. It has two clutchs and two gearshafts. Gears 1, 3, 5 are on one shaft and 2,4,6 are on the other. It senses when you are getting near an up or down shift and moves the gear into position on the non-operating shaft and simultaneously snaps one clutch open and the other one closed to achieve faster than human shifting, plus perfect throttle rev matching on the down shift. The SST also allows left foot braking which makes it different than the VW/Audi/Porsche DSg which kills the throttle if you try to operate the brakes at the same time as the throttle.

Sorry if the US STI power stats was a repost, I missed it ...

I'm on the fence leaning towards bleh, looks to "Saabaru" for me, I liked the previous gens as they were a lot more distinctive, now I'm going to see these things whippin' around town and I'm going to be like" damn that saab was quic....er...wait....ahh...damn it!" Either way though, I'm sure it'll sell by the boatload and last until eternity so it's not like my opinion matters anyway

Just unfortunate that such a great performance for the money can't come with a decent body.
