Teams agree to ban F-ducts in 2011

Formula One teams have agreed to ban the F-duct concept next year. In Sunday morning's FOTA meeting, most of the teams were in favor to ban the system, even though McLaren tried to convince some teams to keep it within the rules.

But Red Bull's Christian Horner indicated that the vote against F-ducts for 2011 was influenced by the marginal safety of the systems seen in Spain last weekend.

Both the Sauber and Ferrari drivers were activating the airflow with one of their hands, often out of high speed corners like Barcelona's turn 3, while simultaneously fidgeting with other controls including brake balance."It's a clever piece of engineering and hats off to the guys who invented it, but some of the solutions this weekend look a little bit marginal when you see drivers driving with no hands basically," Horner is quoted as saying by the BBC.

i a mixed on this subject, I do agree it can be a safety hazard. But at the same time, it’s up to the team leader to stress when to use it and not to use it. I feel teams that like the tech are being punished due to what a driver is doing. But like I said earlier I have mixed opinions on the matter. 1 had I agree with horner and the hand I don’t .

Hamilton's wheel rim failure confirmed

Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, Spanish GPMcLaren has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton's penultimate-lap crash at last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix was caused by a wheel rim failure.

Hamilton looked set for a comfortable second place in the race, but crashed at the high-speed Renault corner when the rim failure caused his left-front tyre to deflate and sent him across the gravel and into the tyre wall.

I am glad Hamilton is not listening to this as this is not the first he has been told that with the new rules, he needs to "take care of the car". On the one hand, he complains why he was asked to pit even though his tires were shot and now that he did not change tires he "lost" second place due to how he drives... A car can take so much pounding and even though they might say it was a "rim failure" everything is pointing at that he indeed flat spotted the left tire which exploded...

So please Hamilton, keep doing what you are doing... You will be going nowhere like this...

i agree with you Polo. Hamilton must keep doing his thing, he is the reason why I am not bored from watching F1 atm. While alonso is playing patty cake , hamilton is saving the series from boredom.

but i do agree, hamilton needs to learn how to control tire wear

 

The F1 Driver Association wanted to spit the Q1 qualifying in to two groups. It was shot down and the drivers aren't happy.

Extreme wheel nut and hub designs in 2010 are contributing to failures, according to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.
The specialist magazine said technical solutions to speed up pistops this year are related to the most recent failures seen on the Red Bull and McLaren cars last week in Barcelona.
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh confirmed this week that a wheel rim failure due to "human error" caused Lewis Hamilton's deflation and crash on the penultimate lap.
Auto Motor und Sport claims that a mechanic had pulled his gun off the wheel too soon during the pitstop, with Whitmarsh now confirming that the nut subsequently "loosened slightly".
"The magnesium part heated up and eventually broke," added the Briton.
Meanwhile, Red Bull's Vettel finished the race at the Circuit de Catalunya third, but without touching the brakes in the last dozen laps.
Auto Motor und Sport said the left front brake disc was longitudinally broken, with the team reportedly believing vibrations caused the failure.
The magazine speculated that, as was also the cause of his Melbourne problem - and Michael Schumacher's retirement in Malaysia - a wheel nut not fitted tightly enough at the pitstop was at the heart of Vettel's failure.

Ouch. Was that a technical failure or just understeer. You see his steering wheel being turned well to the left and still the car slides to the right.

Too bad for Alonso because he was really looking strong in P1 and P2. Oh well, lets see just how many cars can be passed on Monaco. It definitely will be interesting to watch.

Maybe he slid out because his tires were too worn. Maybe he should learn to calm down and preserve his tires

You know, it's funny; in evaluating the talent of various drivers vs their cars it can be a bit tough to say who is better than who. As far as Hamilton beating Alonso regularly when they were in the same chassis; was that due to Alonso contributing so much to development and Hamilton being shown favoritism or can Lewis beat Fernando on most days in an equal chassis? If the rules hadn't changed regarding front tire sizes would Lewis and Michael do better due to more aggressive late braking vs tire degradation (I'm not as interested in watching so tactical of a tire maintenance game vs drivers out driving each other). Kubica is proven talent and Vettel has shown over and over again that he can get the job done and makes a few mistakes like everyone else. Massa is obviously above average. Rosberg is showing his talent as is Webber. Michael has lost a step but I will not count him out as he learns the modern cars. Kovaleinen is obviously not as good as Hamilton. Rubens still has it and can win in a competitive chassis but he's not THE best driver in the bunch. Petrov and Kobayahi are diamonds in the rough with Petrov really needing to keep it together, relax and concentrate (Hard to do). I think Button is quite good to excellent but can be beaten by quite a few drivers depending on circumstance. BTW, the Red Bull chassis is amazing although a little fragile perhaps.
