Mercedes introduces radical new engine cover
06 May 2010

Mercedes GP has revealed a brand-new engine cover which should help reduce drag levels from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards. The latest addition, which sees the air intake dramatically relocated, is part of a major update for the team's MGP W01 car this weekend.

The title-defending team lies fourth in the standings and 49 points off leaders McLaren following the season-opening 'flyaway' races although the Brackley-based squad - which also takes a longer wheelbase case to Spain - hopes to move up the order courtesy of its significantly modified package.

The most notable difference on the new engine cover is the air inlet which, instead of being located directly behind the heads of drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, is now situated further down the top of the car - the idea of such a feature is to reduce the roll hoop in order to allow less air resistance.

Hamilton, Button and Schumacher in top 3 in first practice.

I really hope this is genuine pace we see from Schumi now! I want to see him when he is at his best battling Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso, Button and Massa and all other top drivers. Rosberg too ;-)

It certainly will be an interesting race tomorrow.

Hamilton can hopefully challenge the bulls since the McLaren works better when fully fueled. Or at least it did work better before when fully fueled. We will see if this still stands with the new upgrade package that arrived now in Spain.

Button will have his hands full with Schumacher. If Schumi is feeling comfortable in his car now he will dare to attack fully during the race. It ought to be an interesting show.

Looking forward to the on track tussles tomorrow!

This race looks to be a must watch. The top 5 will fight, Schumacher seems to be settling in.

Even though I was never a MSC fan, I really hope he does well tomorrow. I guess the reason is, i just hate seeing a driver who was once revered as god getting all this bad remarks from the F1 world. So i would love to see him prove them wrong, It's easy for them to attack a driver when he is down. Ill attack MSC again when he is back at the top

I still don't understand how a mass damper is considered a movable aerodynamic device, but this f duct is allowed

There has been so many rules changes between then and now, the mass damper is probably legal again.

My apologies to the Ferrari Mafia for not having mentioned Alonso starting on fourth. I think he will be just as dangerous to the top positions as Hamilton, provided of course that they have gotten the settings correct on his red little toy car.

Ferrari has had some trouble this weekend but it was really strong of Alonso to squeeze out a #4 from their package. Well done Alonso, now fight well.... and fair.

Hamilton had a mechanical failure (Alfy ). That's hardly a FUp. And, Michael has a way to go before anyone can proclaim "MSC is back!". He could be on his way back, I will admit.

I was going to write pretty much the same thing. I was just feeling a bit too out of it to post right then and there. When I saw that tire blowout when it was 2 laps left I was left with a sour taste in the mouth.

As for MSC, I hope he is on his way back. The indication that he is on his way back is the pass he made on Button. And directly afterwards he is criticized by Button for it. So for Schumi it is business as usual.

Schumi was however off the pace compared to Button and Massa. However they could not pass so it clearly was not Schumacher's problem. Expect another trail after Schumacher in Monaco.

With that I am not saying Schumacher is driving very slow. The Mercedes have been the weakest of the top 4 all season. And we know all the other teams came with huge packages to Barcelona so I believe that the potential of the Mercedes car is still in the same position in the pecking order.

The shattered remains of Lewis Hamilton's front left corner is being rushed back to Woking for analysis.

Almost within sight of the chequered flag in Barcelona, the 2008 world champion's McLaren speared into a barrier after a sudden tyre failure, costing him second place both in the race and in the world championship standings.

Team boss Martin Whitmarsh immediately speculated that "debris" probably caused the problem, while Bridgestone said its initial impression was that "this was not caused by a tyre issue".

"We are working closely with McLaren to understand what happened," added the Japanese supplier's Hirohide Hamashima.

As the sun rises again in Europe on Monday morning, the leading theory now is that a stone became stuck in the wheel rim.

After qualifying, Rubens Barrichello took photos with his mobile phone camera of his FW32 and his helmet, so amazed was he about the damage caused by flying stones.

And he told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that he had to nurse his vibrating Williams to the chequered flag after feeling a "strong shock" on the left front.

"We had to slow him down to ensure we didn't have a problem with the tyres," confirmed technical director Sam Michael. "We'll be looking into that for the next race."

Barrichello suspects a stone got stuck in the wheel rim, and a similar cause was also not being ruled out to explain Sebastian Vettel's brake problem.

After the Red Bull was inspected, Christian Horner revealed that the brake disc "was a bit damaged".

"We will only know for sure in the factory," added the Briton.

Hey, the race was a snoozer, but man, what a great finish for Hamilton! The way the wheel came apart, and the car hit the barriers and broke the suspension, couldn't have happened to a better target.
