Ah yes, another RX-8 is better than the 05 Mustang. Does it really matter if someone prefer's the 05 Mustang over the RX-8. Are brunette's better than blonds? Some of these posts remind me of grade school. I'm sure there is another post being started right now how the RX-8 is better than the 350z, or the Honda S2000. I think some of the RX-8 owners here must be the most insecure group around.

...as mentioned above, being insecure about one's choice of car isn't regulated to RX8s. ANY car ppl have to say 'Yeah But...' about will have owners feeling like they have to defend their choices...
Miatas: "Yeah but they HANDLE well!"
Mustangs: "Yeah but it's SO fast!"
C5s: "Yeah but OUTSIDE they are nice looking....who cares about the interior??"
Kias: "Yeah, but let me take the $10K MORE you paid for your car, and turbo mine, and I'll blow your doors off!"
etc....

i personally think the mustang is old and played out i used to like those big v8 like the trans am ram air but nothing is more unique than a twin wankel and about those 0-60 times rx-8 clocks in at 5.9 and the mustang at 5.3 i mean it is faster but the rx-8 isso much sicker looking both interior and interior but they are both still fords in the end

Ok, accuse me of not being a "true car enthusiast" because I vehemently defend the RX-8 when someone craps on it, but damn guys, what do you expect? When somebody comes onto the RX-8 board (or for that matter any other board) and craps all over the resident topic, what do you expect? Us to say "uh, OK, you're right and I was an idiot for buying the car. You're right, I should have gotten a Mustang. Oh woe is me."
NO NO NO!
Sorry guys, but I love my car and I think the Mustang is a mediocre car. Yes, it's very fast, but the refinement and handling are second rate for the class it's supposed to run in. It's also a car that turns no heads and by the fact that they sell hundreds of thousands a year and load the rental fleets with them kills the resale, so it's a crappy investment as well.
Now that all said, I'm no idiot. I'm not going to go on the Mustang board and rip it. Those guys like their car ...
Now, to DMP's comments:
Your first comment says that I IMPLY. I do not. I'm not an idiot street racer and the car doesn't need more power. The only implication I give here is that a) ANYONE that street races IS an idiot; b) The car has enough power for me. YOU drew the implications.
Your second comment that I'm not an idiot street racer, but that I willfully abuse cars that aren't mine ... come on. Tell me you drive rental cars with the utmost respect because "it's not yours". Guess what ... for the day or two that I have that car, IT IS mine. I'm responsible for insuring it, fueling it, not damaging it, and my rental fee goes to pay maintenance. I can legally **** in it, dirty it up, do anything I want in it, as long as I'm willing to pay the piper for cleaning it and fixing it. So, yes, I do have a little extra fun in rental cars. As far as someone at Hertz figuring out who I am ... I doubt it. And with the amount of money I give Hertz on an annual basis (average of $1800 monthly for the last 7 years), I doubt they'd want to lose my business. Is it irresponsible? Perhaps a bit. But I never do it in a situation that would pose any danger to others. Unlike 90% of idiot street racers.
Is an 84 Mustang different than an 05? Of course they are! The same as my 04 RX-8 is different than my '85. But having test driven the Mustang GT now twice, and rented two V-6 2005 Mustangs in the last month, I think I can say that the things I don't like about the car are very similar to back in 1985. a) Lack of refinement; b) Noise, vibration and harshness; c) Crappy ergonomics; d) Dodgy handling. All comparative to current state of the art. The 05 Mustang blows the crap out of an '85 RX-7. But the 04 (and presumably 05) RX-8 is much more to my liking.
And, you know what? (this is answering your LAST comment) A brand new Mustang versus one from Hertz are virtually the same. The one from Hertz just smells worse.
Sorry guys, I like my car better. And one someone tries to trash it, I will defend it. To the detriment of the comparative car.
Now, if someone came in and said "Hey the M3 beat the RX-8" I'd say "I bloody well hope so at 2x the price." Which I did say last week when that comparison popped up.

Geez- what a flamefest this has turned out to be. Yeah- the Mustang looks pretty good- probably great bang for your buck... but it simply isn't in the same league as the RX8 for engineering and quality. Anybody that thinks it is obviously hasn't owned a Ford product.
I can make that comment because I keep buying them myself- I've had a Mustang GT, Escort, and currently on back to back Explorers. Yeah- they're great bang for the buck- but quality is and always will be lacking. Resale value will always suck. Engineering is and will always be second rate to the Japanese vehicles... it's simply not Ford's forte. After these two Explorers I will not buy another Ford- between the quality issues, lousy fit and finish, crappy warranty, and the way they kill the resale value by dumping end of year product at thousands below invoice... they are making disposable vehicles.
I used to not care since I didn't have to drive the damn things, but my wife has grown tired of them as well, and now that she's seen what Japanese quality is supposed to be like (not just talking about the RX8, but Infiniti, Lexus and Acura as well), we're done with Ford. There will always be people that put up with their junk for the bargain basement price, which is great as it allows Mazda to keep innovating... just count me out.

While the mustang may lack some of the touchy feely stuff that the 8 has, that doesn't make it a bad car. We will see about the 05's reliability, but I can't imagine it being any worse than many other cars out there. The performance is DIFFERENT than the 8's. Not crappy, not stupid, not all straight line, different than the 8's. The 8 has decent to good acceleration and great handling, the mustang has decent to good handling and great acceleration.

Hey Guys, I'm new to this website as you can see. I was actually just browsing here because my girlfriend is contemplating buying an RX-8. Basically just seeing what kinds of problems people are running into and such. I do like the 8 and I think it is a nice car that handles great.
Then I saw this topic...
People on here don't seem very educated about the new Mustang or Mustangs in general. We all know the RX-8 is a supurb handler and does have most Stangs in the refinement area but that's about it IMO.
The motortrend numbers the author of this thread gave are pretty crappy times for an 05 GT. Those numbers are closer to a 99-04 GT. Here are some average times:
2005GT (manual)
300hp/320ftlbs tq
5.1 0-60mph
Mid 13's in the 1/4mi
99-2004GT (manual)
260hp/302ftlbs tq
5.4 0-60mph
13.8-14.2 1/4mi
I believe the motortrend test was done with an automatic trans and, even so, are pretty crappy times as with most Gen. interest mags.
I think one guy on here said that he wouldn't buy a Mustang because you can rent them at Hertz? Yeah, ok buddy, that some how makes it a worse car? Maybe because they're really popular? You can't knock the car for being a legend. I also remember that back in the day (late 60's) you could rent a Shelby GT350H from Hertz. The legendary Rent-a-racer. Pretty gay huh...
I hate that everyones knock on the Mustang is that its popular or "there are too many out there" . How does that make it any less of a car?
As far as the live axel setup on the 05 being out of date? The new one is actually pretty damn sophisticated if you take a look at the design. From what I have heard it's like a combo of agility from an IRS setup but with the stiffness of the solid axel. Compared to the 99-04GT axel is it MUCH improved. Some on here have said: "Ford is just being cheap, they should have just gone with IRS" Um, no dumbass. For what the GT is, live axle is the best setup. Most people in the Mustang community were angry when they heard rumors the new Stang would have IRS. IRS SUCKS for launching and drag racing. You can't get traction and in many cases if the car has too much power, it snaps and breaks. This is why serious racers that have 03+ Cobras switch out their IRS for a live axel setup. Guess what? They get better times. Mustangs weren't meant for handling and still they don't handle all that bad. Obviously it's nowhere near the much lighter RX-8 but it's still ok. You don't get the refinement and ride comfort of the RX-8 with this setup but thats the price you pay for power. And trust me, you get used to it.
As far as looks go, well, that's up to the person. I think Ford did a great job on the 05 and I also like the interior a lot. There are pleanty of people that hate the looks of the RX-8. Although, I like the looks of both cars.
All the dumb mullet comments and stereotypes aside, I chose the Stang because I like what it brings to the table. I don't autocross or anything like that, which is about the only performance venue the RX-8 has over the Stang (I hate parking lot racing BTW). I just like speed and raw power for an awesome price. As far as the occasional stoplight romp, the RX-8 doesn't stand a chance, even against a 99-04GT.
Sorry about the rant guys. I'm not a troll, and I hope I didn't come off as one. I like the RX-8 a lot and look forward to possibly drving one a lot :D If she'll let me of course. I know people chose cars for all different reasons and comparing these two cars is kind of difficult because they are too different. I just hate seeing ignorant comments made...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All that aside, is there anything I should be looking for when looking at year old RX-8's? Any common problems I should be aware of?
BTW, I have a 99GT if anyone cares.

Damn, I love that shelby. Don't read a couple of posts and take it that the majority feels that way. Alot of 8 owners were defending the stang. I started a thread a while back titled finally saw the 05 mustang or something like that saying how I enjoyed the car closeup. It was a black GT my neighbor bought. Sounds fantastic, i didn't mind the interior. Two of my friends back in school had a 65 and 66 respectively so it kind of gave me good memories. I have always loved Mustangs. When I saw the first article about the 05 I told my wife immediately that would be the next car because I felt they finally went back to what it should look like sort of. I frankly got tired of waiting and shortly there after saw the 8 and feel in love with it. I like the S2000, the stang, the 8, etc. etc. We should be glad we have plenty of choices.

Having all of my car freinds driving mustangs, while I drove my modified miata, I too came to appreciate the stang. (And would you believe-no mullets in the bunch!) I do not have many positive memories from the ford cars I've had either (escort GT, 3 ford taurus's), but I will not hesitate to say that the 65 and 66 mustangs my friends have are damn fun and to this day great looking! I think ford did a great job on the 05, but this is not the type of car I prefer. However, I can appreciate them just the same without feeling insecure about the integrity of my 8 or miata. Just my 2 cents...

The seven dwarves are down in the mines when there is a cave-in. Snow White runs to the entrance and yells down to them.
In the distance a voice shouts out "The Mustang is a far better car that the RX-8!"
Snow White says: "Well at least Dopey's alive!"
