Dude, first this was a thread on the upcoming Z. Naturally, being an Rx8 forum, ppl will want to compare their pride against its competition.
NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR GTO. Its like comparing against a NEON SRT4 .. 'cept your ride looks like a frickin bloated cavalier!
NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR GTO (did i say that already?) You know, I can respect a car that has a lot of HP, but heck I'd take an underpowered rx-8 over that ugly thing you drive any day!

Seriously though, you need to calm down.

It's easy too make an American sports car... Any retarded paraplegic could scream "bigger engine", and call it a day on an equally aesthetically appealing car as it's 15K Cavalier cousin.
It takes an engineer too cut-off weight, and think more about lightening the whole vehicle too get the most out of every velocity.
It just comes down too different buyers. Some want power, some want control

Mazda should be freakin out about this new Z. First off the RX8 sales flopped. They are not doing well at all and any dealership you ask will tell you they are great cars but in truth they are great... for track against high end mazdas and low end everything else. The car is great, I want one of my own, but it lacks torque and speed. For 230 horses it's top speed is only an average of 128. That's not that great considering my Honda Civic Si topped out at 123 with a stock 160 horse engine. The car has tons of potential but mazda seems to have skimmped on the performance and just through in leather seats (which suck) and a navagation system (which is for the women, lol). And don't forget the fact that they are charging 28k for a car that really should cost 22-24k max.
My personal opinion: Bring out a new RX8. Either get rid of the back seat, lighten up and shorten the chassis by about 6 inches and then put a 3 rotor engine in there. 380 horses easily when done right. For all you gas worrying pusies out there the engine can be modified to support your premium addictions. I bet 25 mpg highway would not be impossable. Plus that engine should give it more compairable torque power.... OOOOORRRR!!! Wait for the up and coming word on the new RX7 coming in 2010. Wholy crap does it sound sweet with it's turbo hybrid.
But if your impatient like me then take your RX8, drop a 4 rotor engine in there, get the vehicle technically sound to handle the purring tigers under the hood, and then there is only one thing left to do: Sit back and kick up your feet waiting for the new Z challenges thinking you at best are a suped up 2 rotor RX8 with badass track time and an atrocouse (check spelling) 1/4 mile.

I really don't think Mazda is very concerned with the new Z. I think it is clear they are really not interested in competing power wise with comperable cars. With the rotary as is, there is no way they can. It would be a miracle if they could get the rotary up to 275 hp without compromising fuel economy and/or reliability. Even with that new 2010 rotary they are supposedly working on, I can't see Mazda even coming close to 300 hp, let alone 350, barring some huge technological breakthrough in this new rotary engine. I'd be happy if they could just give it more torque and not necessarily more hp. Put it in the rx-8 or maybe even a lighter car such as the Kabura/rx-7 or whatever it will be and we should have a winner.

lol a 350Z guy calling a car ugly... I care about his GTO, so there....GTO is smooth, understated, and suprisingly nimble for it's weight, with a sweet interior, not to mention what the LS2 does for it. The 350Z is, well, quick (just not as quick as the GTO), and fairly nimble, but that's about it. All the weight in the upcoming version of the Z will be getting rid of the '90s Chevy quality interior.

And since when has Mazda ever tried to keep up with anyone???

Last time I checked my car maxed out at 152 mph. So where ever you got your figures it was either a moron driving or an automatic (Nothing wrong with that).
Sorry to break it to you but there is virtually no vehicles in the 28k price range or below that can out handle an Rx8. A Chevy Cobalt SS supercharged is the only car that comes close.

Besides, Nissan had a 300hp V6 of their own in '89 as well. Things change, added safety regs, inflation, emissions, blah blah blah.... cars have to get reinvented to do the same things they did before.
