The article only shows part of the patent.
Mazda says its a 4 cyl diesel
Supercharging Device For Engine (Mazda Motor)
There was another patent a few weeks ago for a controller that predicts pre ign in the upcomeing skyactiv x explains how they prevent pre ign when in spark mode without lowering the effective compression ratio.http://www.freshpatents.com/-dt20170...0170226953.php

Yes saw this patent leaked several days ago. Well maybe all their new piston engine tech will produce cars that catch on and sell well, allowing them to bring us the new rotary.

I think it makes sense for Mazda to try them out on piston engines first, as piston engines are, admittedly, a more tried design.

Just like their new HCCI engines, if things go well, these technologies will find their way to improve the next rotary engine.

After a deep view of patent, my opinion is that this one was a possible solution of development discarded in favor of Skyactiv-X layout showed few days before the publication of this patent .

Some tech of this patent can be used in diesel engines, high performance versions of gas piston engines and eventually rotary (e.g. supercharging system)
