Yeah it's definitely not for everyone, just like RX8s aren't for everyone, but there is a growing market for this format of car.

Also if Mazda can make this thing a hoot to drive, they might have a pretty good advantage over such thoroughbreds as Prius, Leaf, Volt, Kona, i3 and the Kia Soul.

And yes Unknown. Winter is coming

It's probably one of the prettiest EVs around. So kudos to Mazda's first shot. I am not sure about the RX-8 like doors. With the RX-8's longer wheel base the demi-doors make sense and allowed for easy ingress and egress for a coupe profile. The MX-30's wheelbase is shorter akin to the CX-30. Based on the photos you can see even with the demi-doors swung open, the front seats still need to be reclined forward. So... what's the point?

The low range is a bummer.

Yeah, first real winter for me since I have only lived at West Coast until a few months ago for my work.

I can personally get behind EVs and they make for great commuters and daily drivers.

Depends on where you live, it may not be a problem.

Lower range = fewer batteries = lower price so that works in buyer's favour as well. If you just use the thing for grocery shopping and short distance commuting then range is not gonna be a concern, at least with good temperature.

It doesn't even have to be that short of a commute, how many people drive over 100 miles in a day and don't have access to a charger aside from home? I would even be ok with half the battery and a range extender if it meant reducing the price from the supposed CAD$50k to $35~$40k.

$50k CAD!
They can't do that, the Kona EV is 45 with 400km of range.
IMO they need to get in at 37-42CAD base price.. Better car than a Prius or Bolt, cheaper than an e-Golf, Kona, Volt.

EVs need to be at the same price as ICE before I jump on it. Else where are the savings? Strip out the batteries, these are econboxes. The model 3 interior felt like materials from a Ford Focus!
I feel mfgs are playing the pricing game because government rebates. Without these rebates, the EV price will fall.

Doing some rough math, driving 15,000km/year you save about $10k after 5 years of ownership on gas (using my local prices).
Plus $8k of govt rebates at the moment.

So the $45k Kona EV - 10k - 8k becomes a $27k Kona.
A 2020 mid-range RAV4 is still a $38k RAV4. Is a Kona a RAV4? Meh. Do enough people actually use RAV4s extra capabilities? Meh.

So like if Mazda brings this in at 50k, it's a complete non-starter. It's not going to out-RAV4 a RAV4 at the same end-of-the-road price. Nor outpace a Kona with half the range at lower price.

Really hope Mazda puts this in the right bracket.

Gas isn't cheap everywhere...

If you live in California(the US) or West Coast BC(Canada), the gas saving can actually build up quickly.

And econoboxes is what you need. I like driving a manual sports car for fun, but getting stuck behind rush hour traffic? EV, please.

Tesla's are not good examples as they are not nearly as experienced in manufacturing as most major car makers. If you look at offerings from major car makers, their EVs are not really that different.

Granted they are not perfect, but there are some situations where they work great. Even a hybrid can be a good deal for some uses.

I was waiting for Mazda to release their EV vehicle to make my decision on what to buy next.
It won't be this thing, as I find it visually disgusting.

I was expecting something that looked like a Mazda 3 or 6, or even a CX-3/CX-5 styled vehicle, but this thing is just heinous.

Why did Mazda decide to make an ugly vehicle now?

The only thing making it ugly is that two tone look they are going for .... I'm sure there will be colour combos that look great with that shape.

So a torsion beam rear suspension, ugly flat body panels everywhere, and it appears to have built off of the Mazda 2 chassis, so not much rear seat room.
It's an suv body style, so it will lose range in higher speed highway use, and it has a small battery pack, so it won't have all that much of a range to begin with.
Oh, did I mention that it's ugly yet?

Well, the good news is that I won't have to see one in person for at least 4 years here in the US.
Maybe Mazda will release something else I want to buy in the meantime.

*insert sad face here*

They still gunna do the rotary range extender ? There is no mention of it in the blurb. I still think it will look great without the two tone thing and the range extender idea I really like . Would def. consider as my run around vehicle if they have the extender option.

That would be a great commuter vehicle. But if you ever tried putting 4 people in an RX8 and park in a parking lot, getting in and out gets old quickly.
