MAZDA MX-30
Program Manager’s Message Mazda MX-30 - Living True to Yourself For those who desire a life with things that soothe and please the spirit; for those who want to live positively, actively choosing possessions and experiences that, by their own standards, are a match for their lifestyle; for those with the wisdom and inventiveness to tackle problems facing people, society and the earth in their own style, without overextending themselves; and for those who wish to create good times together with the people around them and with people all over the world. For those customers, the Mazda MX-30 offers a creative time and space that will allow them to live true to themselves. Our lives are infused with vast quantities of information and ever-evolving technologies and are getting more comfortable and convenient by the day. But an increasing number of people, pressured by time and information overload, are longing for a simpler, more natural life that allows them to be themselves. I also believe that, amid declining opportunities for face-to-face communication, time spent with companions and loved ones is becoming more and more precious. Because cars are a familiar presence in people’s daily lives, we want to make the time they spend with their car richer and more human. How to achieve this with the MX-30? We set out to answer that question by trying to understand the feelings, spaces and possessions that our customers value. Living true to yourself requires the strength of spirit to be true to your feelings and continually question other people’s “common sense” and values. That is what will empower you to face up to yourself, take that first positive step and continue on your chosen path. To help you on your way, we aimed to make MX-30 a space that settles your mind when you get in. Based on a “Human Modern” design concept, the styling of the MX-30 has a human feel that puts you at ease and makes it a pleasure to look at all day long. Once inside, a simple yet functional console welcomes you. Airy spaces connect the driver and passenger seat areas, giving the sense of a refreshing breeze circulating inside the car. The cabin features materials sourced from nature or designed to reduce their burden on the environment and encourages you to breathe deeply. The space is designed to help settle your mind and offers a seemingly incongruous sense of being “enveloped in openness”. *********************** We want people and cars to be freer. So we gave the MX-30 freestyle doors to offer an inspiring space that customers can enjoy in a variety of creative ways. A car should be more than a mere means of transportation; it should stimulate people’s inherent creativity and desire for continual growth. For example, in the course of your daily routine, you might like to drop by the local park, open up the freestyle doors and just enjoy the view. The sounds of the breeze and the birds singing calm you, and you begin to feel like yourself again. In time, you will be ready to tighten your bootlaces and begin again on your journey. At other times the car can function as a base camp, allowing you to watch movies outdoors with your friends, or enjoy conversations or a meal with the freestyle doors wide open. Such a space will naturally attract friends both old and new. Because the cabin helps you feel focused and positive, you can feel the joy of driving fully, from the bottom of your heart. The car responds faithfully to your steering inputs, and the ride feel is comfortable not only for you but for your passengers as well. Even on routine commutes, you can enjoy a pure driving experience that will revitalize both your mind and body. Through MX-30, we want to join you as you journey through life, always living true to yourself. I hope that this car will help customers all over the world take on challenges and come out with satisfied smiles on their faces. *********************** Program Manager of MX-30 Tomiko Takeuchi Summary Mindfully designed with a purpose: Your life From the outset, the development team behind the Mazda MX-30 wanted to create a car that would become a partner to its owner. It should beg to be driven daily, and every time customers get behind the wheel, their affection for it should grow and they should feel more and more themselves. Everything about the model, from the styling that breeds a sense of familiarity to the open-feeling cabin that sets the mind free, is uncompromisingly designed around the user. Values of the MX-30 Human Modern design concept pushes out the boundaries of Kodo design The introduction of the all-new Mazda3 in 2019 marked the beginning of a new phase for Kodo design. Under the Car-as-Art ethos, Mazda is striving to further expand the design language’s expressive range and raise the artistic quality of its designs. With the MX-30, while retaining the beautiful, handcrafted forms of Kodo as a base, the design team also explored an expressive direction more in touch with emerging new values and lifestyles. That process resulted in the design of MX-30. The Human Modern concept spurred a number of unprecedented approaches. The exterior is uncompromisingly simple to emphasize its beauty as a solid mass. The styling creates a friendly expression, and the cabin design, with its framed top and freestyle doors, embodies an image of lightness. The interior aims to give occupants a sense of being “enveloped in openness,” with a floating console and unique materials designed to minimize environmental impact. The MX-30 embodies an expressive direction in car design that helps customers discover their natural selves through the process of living with the car. A cabin interior that focuses the mind and feelings with fine craftsmanship and environmentally-friendly materials The team created an open-feeling cabin interior and paid particular attention to the selecting the right materials and showing them in ways that bring out their best. Heritage Cork used in the console tray is designed to emphasize the texture and visual warmth of the material. The door trim features a fibrous material with a texture that seems to contain air, creating a material- based sense of openness within the cabin. Both of these materials are designed to be low- impact and sustainable. The door trim uses fibers made from recycled plastic bottles and the cork is harvested from the bark of trees without felling. The comfortable interior of the MX-30 is composed of such environmentally friendly materials. A touch panel heater control is adopted for the first time in a Mazda car, making operation safe and intuitive. This 7-inch touch panel also welcomes drivers getting into the car with a graphic that changes along with the external environment, offering an interactive experience designed to bring people closer to their car. From materials through to functionality and from technology through to design, all elements work together to create a space that encourages mindfulness from the moment customers open the door, while driving, and right up until they exit the vehicle. *********************** A driving experience of pure joy. Mazda wants people to enjoy driving in any situation, and that applies as much to EVs as to any kind of car. In order to realize a driving experience that makes you look forward to your daily commute, Mazda has relentlessly applied the human-centric philosophy in the development of new technologies such as Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture. Now, with the MX-30, the company introduces a new electric drive technology called e–Skyactiv. To enhance the consistency of omnidirectional vehicle response to control inputs and realize seamless transitions between G forces, electric G-Vectoring Control Plus (e-GVC Plus) is also equipped. Natural feedback crafted to match human characteristics is afforded by precise torque control and sound that lets the driver know exactly what the car is doing. Combined with the model’s smooth vehicle behavior, these factors result in the refinement of Mazda’s renowned driving joy. Advanced safety performance for enjoyment and peace of mind Aiming for a future society free of car accidents, Mazda is continually working to advance safety performance under the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy. The MX-30 strengthens the i- Activsense advanced safety technology suite with new functionality added to Smart Brake Support (SBS) aimed at helping to prevent collisions at intersections and technology designed to help keep drivers on track on roads with curbs or discernable edges, even in the absence of lane markings. And thanks to a body that is both strong and efficiently absorbs energy despite adopting freestyle doors with no center pillar, collision safety performance is excellent. Mazda’s engineers incorporated the latest technologies and development concepts, including a carefully designed structure to protect the high-voltage battery, so that anybody can enjoy the responsive performance of the MX-30 with peace of mind. A car that stimulates customers to use it in new and creative ways Mazda aims to create a deeper bond between people and cars and make life with a car a richer and more rewarding experience. With the MX-30, the company hopes to offer not only a new choice for customers but new and life-enriching ways of using and spending time with your car. In addition to the above-mentioned values, the adoption of the freestyle doors not only enhances functionality but opens up a wide range of new and creative uses for the MX-30. Mazda hopes that, in addition to enjoying the drive, customers will use the car creatively and make it truly their own. *********************** https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...879d8ca2b4.jpg |
You just had to tease us [USA] with that word station wagon....

I'm glad that the Mazda3 with Skyactiv-X HCCI engine is moving forward (when in the USofA is another matter). I couldn't wait - I sold our 1-owner 2002 CRV (needed too much work all at once) and bought a Honda Fit (Honda Jazz) to bridge the gap as the family hauler.
The Mazda3 also adopts the new-generation Skyactiv-X gasoline engine for the first time. In providing a high level of combustion efficiency and seamless switching between combustion types, the engine’s innovative Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) technology makes the Skyactiv-X well suited for application in line with Mazda’s human-centric development philosophy. The driver senses smooth, quality torque production the instant he or she presses the accelerator pedal. Skyactiv-X offers the freedom of movement to confidently merge with traffic or pass other vehicles as it masters the flow of traffic with natural ease. It is an engine that enriches daily life by delivering a quality experience in any kind of driving situation. |
I skipped all the marketing and PR bullshit and went straight to the specs,
There are certainly things to be liked about the MX-30 and the potential of adding more EV tech to Mazda's future cars. The interior tech finally looks up to par to anything remotely modern. Styling is spot on for the EV market. However, a 35.5kWh battery, you'll be lucky to hit 120 miles of range in that thing. Quite concerning especially with the lack of charging station infrastructure in the US that is not proprietary to Tesla. The cheap black plastic body molding is the only eyesore, and it'll be even more so after a couple years of UVA/UVB exposure just like any other Mazda black plastic. BTW, does anyone else notice the "freestyle" door handles are exactly the same as the RX-8 minus the outer trim? |
don't knock something that worked....yes I noticed that " "freestyle" door handles are exactly the same as the RX-8 minus the outer trim

My local US contacts has the CX-30 listed in the dealer Mazda GEPC for Spare Parts (Catalogue) as a 2020 Model Year. |
I don't like the 2-tone paint job cutting off at the belt line.
It makes it look like the top of one car stacked on the bottom of another. |
still odd ot me that it's called an MX
although I'm still perplexed by the CX-30 naming so I guess the craziness continues. style wise, not my thing but it is in line with EV styling so I'm sure it'll appeal to that audience. Range won't be great given that battery so that's a bit of a concern but it's not a total dealbreaker. |
These guys claim it'll have 140 bhp, an option for a rotary range extender and between and 200-250km range. In the Leaf category, but looking even weirder.

^^^ what is this silly kilometer you reference.
*quick google search* ah, so a max of around 155 miles. Hey that's not too bad actually, you'd just have to be disciplined about charging it pretty frequently. I'm still curious to see how / where they deploy the rotary range extender and when it will make it's debut |
what he said - rotary range extender has many benefits (and keeps the rotary alive).
|
The style isn't my thing, but it is a lot less ugly than most EV offerings. (Why do auto makers believe only quirky weirdos would want an EV? They should all have a look at the Jaguar iPace.) The standard range would work for me and my 30 mile each way daily commute, but I would still need a secondary vehicle for longer trips. That's where the range extender could come into play, but then why buy this over any other hybrid?

IMO this will come down to the price. If it's priced attractively it competes directly (and favorably) with the Volt, e-Golf, Prius and various plug-in hybrid versions of Mitsubishis, Toyotas and Hondas. Bigger than the sedans, hopefully better use of space and economy than existing SUV chassis retrofitted with hybrid powertrains. The Hyundai Kona EV looks great on paper, but they VASTLY priced themselves out of the market around here. |
If they make it a plug-in hybrid, I can see the appeal. There aren't many options for those.
|
The return of suicide door is something. Always like that design and hope more cars use it.

Supposedly Ford has a Mustang SUV in the plans, so using a sports car name for an SUV isn't that weird anymore. . |
I no longer wish to live in this simulation. Stop it, please. I want out.

This TMS would have to of been the worse I can remember with a huge Dull and Boring range of cars made in Japan...
This Mazda name branding is just stupid. So we have a CX-30 and MX-30 (EV)...WHY.. Why the hell is the CX-30 called that, it should have been called CX-4 even IF China has that model name, so what!!! the USA Mazda wide body Mazda 6 ONLY sold in NA was different to Japan Made Mazda 6 for rest of the world, It worked then so why not the CX-4 now. This new CX-30 name is the biggest error in branding that Mazda has ever made since the Eunos (Luxury) naming disaster. IMO the CX-30 will be a huge flop because Mazda Marketing has and will confused people. As for the MX-30 (ev) go back to the STYLING Drawing Board again and the Range is WAY too short. |

Like CX-50, CX-70, CX-80, CX-90 ??? Remember we have Mazda BT-50 Utes down-under and rest of world. |

Maybe there aren't many in AU, but my neck of the woods is surrounded by 150km range EVs. Leaves, Focuses, i3s, etc. It suits the common use case. |

I see plenty of EVs in Calgary. If you want to have an EV here, you have to first have a house with a garage to install the charger. Then the car won't get exposed to the cold for too long, decreased range isn't that big of a deal.
