Since you live in CA, I say get the bike. In most the rest of the country, due to the climate, turbo.

My friend just died last month riding. Only going 45mph, someone ran a red, game over.

Do yourself and anyone who loves you a favor, get the Turbo and keep the steel cage around you while your hauling ***.

Sorry to hear about your friend SoFL. Ten years ago we (my extended family) lost my brother's best friend for 25+ year's father to a motorcycle acciedent. The accident was due to faulty repair work done on his Goldwing and he crashed at about 25 mph after leaving the shop on the bike (his wife, our friend's mother, was driving just behind him at the time). We still commemorate him on our rides.

If you love riding, then you do it. Life is full of risks everytime you step out the door and you can't worry about every numb-nut that runs a red light or what not. You take that risk even in a car. Just ride safe and within you abilities, avoid traffic (i.e. cars) as much as possible, maintain your bike, etc. and the deck's stacked in you favor. Most of riding is in the blood - you can't explain it . . . you just do it.

So to the OP, I'd say if riding is in your blood, then get the bike over the turbo!

This sums it up. I also extend my regrets for your friend, SOFL. The bottom line is that you have to determine what level of risk you are willing to take. I would guess if you buy a turbo, you probably don't closely follow the speed limit.

The truth is that any vehicle can be dangerous, and while motorcycles are certainly much worse vehicles to be involved in a crash with, a properly maintained bike and a rider who is on the ball and within his limits has a better chance of avoiding that accident. Get what makes you happy, then stay safe with either one.

i am fully aware of the risks inherent in riding around the city

anyways I've decided to hold off on the turbo for now, reason being that i want to upgrade the rx8 part for part and build up to a turbo eventually, so that when i drop it in, the rest of the car will be ready, and i want to do it right

im still on the fence about the bike, will let you guys know what happens

Whats the price comparison between the turbo and the Bike -

The install and dyno tune might not be as much as you think... I guess it would depend on the end result you want.

For speed - durr, the ducati would be the direct route.

for reliability in your investment... both have their up's and downs...

for your car: it depends on how much abuse you put on your RX-8, and how much pressure you plan on putting on your stock internals. (edit: noticed the previous post just now - good idea to wait for the engine build first).

for your Bike: well you live in cali, so its not the same type of driving we have in the NW, and since you already have a bike, its not a matter of you not knowing how to drive one...

... In the end though, a ducati isnt going to make that cool 'whoosh' BOV signature sound at the release of every pedal drop...

btw... I'm selling a full greddy turbo kit. HAHA...
