His statement is absolutely true. It happens all the time at UAW plants. It's just a matter of how strong the UAW chapter at a particular plant happens to be. I've worked in plants and seen some of these things firsthand--it's atrocious. It is very, very difficult to fire people even after multiple serious offenses, let alone poor job performance.
That may be true at UAW plants. It is definately not true at the USWA plant that I work in. That being said,I have never been able to quite understand the hatred that some people have for labor unions in this country.Labor contracts are negotiated by both parties agreed to and signed by both parties.Having a labor union in a large plant like GM benefits both the company and the union members as well as the city that the plant is located in.If it didn't ,when their is cause for a strike ,the company could just hire all new employees and kick the union out.Yes, being a member of a labor union does afford you with certain protections but to say that labor unions are the cause of companies going bankrupt is just false. There are countless other reasons why companies go under. What about the insanely high salaries , bonuses, and stock options that upper management recieves? What about the bad management practices? The people fortunate enough to go to college that think that somehow they are worth more than someone who did not just burns my ***.Why should you feel jealous of someone who doesn't have a degree just because they make as much money as you? If your career choice was to work in a bank, restaurant ,or whatever then that was a choice you made. If you feel you are underpaid for what you do ,look for another job.
