I bot the 8, I drive the 8, I mod the 8, I push the 8 regardless of fuel and oil costs....I've never achieved better than 400km per tank, not once....and Jimmy crack corn but I don't care, I'm having too much fun

Scary. A few more clicks and you will have to walk to a petrol station.

I never let it drop too low below last quarter mark. Too much air in the tank; degrades fuel, increase chance of rust, condensation danger (oil floats so some water will get in the engine). And if the fuel line goes empty, you risk damaging your engine and the danger of the engine suddenly stalling while you drive.

You have a plastic tank, what rust?

Condensation is not an issue because of more positive pressure in the tank from fuel vapour, unless you enjoy leaving your fuel cap open for hours after your car cools down.

condensation is an issue for any petrol tank, just that it may not be significant for car fuel tank given its size. the positive pressure will only prevent water/air from getting in. as long as there is air, there will be condensation. esply in singapore where humidity of air is high.

Condensation is not an issue unless you leave the cap open after your drive. The build up of vapour pressure is enough to drive out the water

Maybe i am just being too cautious. Rust in the fuel tank can get real bad as i have seen it before (In a nissan sunny or toyota corrolla some years back). Somehow once there is rust, it can get real bad.

Did not know we had a plastic fuel tank. Thought fuel tank and fuel lines must meet certain regulations against breakage, wear and collision damage?

I heard ours is moulded to a certain shape but did not know if its of plstic or polymer materials.

Then again it real risky to drive so low on petrol.

Hmm .. honestly speaking if you can practice smooth driving this figure is never an isue with the RX8. Even tried once with Ipoh to Singapore with just one tank and the fuel low warning came on about 15km to Singapore Tuas entry. Totalled about 520 km. But bear in mind that is provided you followed strictly to the speed limit. On a 90km/h stretch do 90 .... etc.

Even in Singapore driving I am averaging on 8.5 - 8.9 consistently. Rev not more than 4k.....with 2 pax.. 70% expressway and 30% city. Smooth driving and route planning is the key to optimum fuel efficiency I supposed. (oh ya if you have not been practicing this maybe this will help ..... try driving just below 90km on the expressway ..eg 88-89km and you will see the diff it makes to your fuel consumption)

For mostly city driving then I will average 7.5km/l.

MM spec , 6MT in total stock form.

oh ya also the fuel you use makes a world of diff. try sticking to one type of petrol .... dun keep changing them. Esso and Mobil are not very good I must say .... and so far the best I have tried is from Caltex 98 Gold and Platinum. The figures obtained above are by using 98 Gold. Now I am trying out the Platinum to see if I can get better figure... it should. Even though 95 is cheap but I swear that it delivers a lot lesser mileage.... most I got was around 7.8- 7.9km/l and the significant lack in power is just not worth it.

Ok, last tank i got 404.4 on 48.50 or 8.34L.

Yup, i like fast too. But these few weeks quite critical as my wife about to deliver.

Taking this chance to see how good the 8 can get for consumption.

But i rarely whack my car very hard anyway. Only when its safe and clear.

Yeah totally agreed. But then again I thought we are supposed to be discussing about how well the RX8 can deliver when in comes to fuel consumption.. no ??

Driving the RX8 can and will be fun when you drive them as and when the condition permits. In Singapore wat sort of fun are we looking at? Seriously revving from one traffic light to another? Come on cops are all over here in Singapore ... get real!!!

Fun driving is driving in a proper race track. Track your car and push it to the limit and that is fun driving.

Max out your car on some streches of the North Highway and the RX8 I have tried was 230km.... that was with a bit of help with slip streams effect from the car in front.

BTW smooth driving is fast driving lesson 101....

"its not the power that counts, its the way you use it"

Actually i felt quite relaxed driving the 8 at a reasonable pace.

My is also around 320km for a full tank.

I do not drive hard, but still can't get more than 350km.
I did tell the technicians during my servicing at MM. but still the same.

Wondering if theres anything wrong with the car..

Wah piang, is this the Toyota Prius forum?? The RX-8 is not an economical car, and the rotary engine is not known for good fuel consumption. If getting great mileage out of a tank gives you the most satisfaction, then you should be driving a Camry or something. That car will give you relaxed driving, great economy etc etc.

I have not gotten below 400km..... in fact the best I have done in singapore alone was 450km to fuel low indication and still have at least 10 litre in tank when top-up .... can actually push all the way to 480km if playing with the limit.

Yes agree this is not an economical car .... but hey I dun see any reason why ppl would not appreciate if we can sort of have the best of both world......

There is no best of both world with the 8...it's one world or the other. Yu can baby it and drive at 4k max to conserve petrol, but why?....what a waste of its superb machinery and handling. Else, you can drive the 8 like it was designed and swallow the petrol/oil cost as a function of sheer exhilaration....

Hmm... I think there is a misunderstanding here.

1: Here we are discussing what's the best fuel consumption the RX8 could deliver...therefore I think it just make sense that we are putting up the best figures here.

2. Superb engineering on the RX8 ... I don't doubt it .. in fact thats the reason why I got this car .... but hey ... if you were to max out the car here in Singapore... any idea of the conserquences? By the second gear you are already doing more than 100km ..... and when you engage your third gear EVEN with the smoothest gear change .. you are looking at least 130KM/h..... hey ...wats the speed limit in Singapore? 40KM more than speed limit = court case ..... 50km = suspension of license ... no two ways about it .... wats the use of an excellent engine when you dun even have the license to enjoy your ride????

3. As I have said .... we are talking about the best econ we can get out of the RX8 in Singapore driving now .... and if you want sheer excitement .... drive up north ... that's the only way you can experience the RX8. Bear in mind I do track my car too and that's where I will unleash the full potential of the car. Not one of those "never go more than 100km/h" type of guy......... hope it clears the air......

4. Economical driving is an art many fail to realise. To master it one would need to know the basic of smooth driving ..be it town driving or track driving. Been on an endurance race and you will then notice how important it is to conserve your fuel and yet managing a respectable speed at all times. Remember a legend once said " When I look fast .. I am actually very slow...... on the other hand when I look slow I am actually very fast" ...... Hope it shed some lights !!

As Emperor pointed out right from beginning in his opening post, this topic would undoubtedly be flammable material (pun intended), but I don't see any reason why anyone should get even remotely upset by some of the posts.

Just remember that everyone is different and there is nothing wrong if some owners choose to drive conservatively and even if they post some decent FC mileages, it does not mean they drive very slowly all the time or do not enjoy themselves as much as the other guy/gal who drives fast and have lower FC figures. Case in point, Cannavaro hit 500km before refueling, but he also drives like a bat out of hell (must be making up for his time in OZ). High FC may be due to some technical defect or poor tuning so it does not necessarily equate to fun driving. We are just posting our figures for info it's not a competition of who has the best FC. Bottomline is, be more tolerant since we're all one big happy family of 8 owners.

Too many variables to make a meaningful comparison. Different individuals have wildly varying driving styles, and shifting threshold from person to person can differ by as much as 2k rpm for each gear. PI and MM cars might have different ecu flashes, auto/manual will also contribute to the variation, tire widths and pressures also different.. body kits/air dams/skirts/spoilers also increase consumption, some ppl also have lots of junk in the trunk, eat too much during CNY, etcetcetc. Maybe someone getting horrible FC might have a lot of 'negative' factors in his car all at once! I think 'fun driving' is only one of the many possible variables.

Maybe can try the <3750rpm method to prevent the secondary set of injectors kicking in? (yah lah yah lah, i know, 'lai dat where got fun??') Mixed results reported by others in the forum, however.
