Cool The low fuel consumption competition thread

Yes, this is flaming material for a 8 driver.

As my wife is 9 months pregnant and she is complaining about our extremely high petrol bill. I decided to do a experiment.

I tried not revving the engine too high or stepping on too much gas. So i got to try out how fuel efficient can our 8 get and at the same time train to drive when my baby is due next month.

22 jan: 331.1 kms on 40.08 or 8.26 km/ l. Rev close to redline twice but generally smooth driving and quite a bit of idling when my wife was waiting in the car. About 70% highway driving with 2 person in car.

26 Jan: 234.1 on 29.59 or 7.91 km /l. I put in more petrol than usual so actual full tank should be approx 28 l so should be about 8.36 km /l. About 40 km is ferrying 4 adults. Stuck in a jam at paya lebar for about 1 hour. Generally smooth driving.

Mind you, i did not drive like a road hog but just go normally without sudden accelerations or decelerations. I am still faster than most traffic 90% of the time, starting off from traffic lights.

yours are damn good figures.

my fuel consumption range between 5.8-6.5 km/l

MM 6MT
RON 95 mobil/shell [somewhat think that shell can get better fuel mileage, not conclusive tho]
75-80% city driving

Usually i get figures like yours too. But with frequent quick acceleration (about 4k rpms). My aircon os always set to 25 or 25.5 degrees.

25 degrees is quite hot right?

I turn my temp down to 20 degrees n its still quite warm in the car.

I did try your driving method but still get 6 km/L

"I tried not revving the engine too high or stepping on too much gas"

Good God, man... Whats the point of having an RX-8 then?

Teach the woman to appreciate the 8, problem fixed.

My aircon is set to 25 degrees, or 24 if the weather is hot. The V-Cool really helps in keeping the temp down. So for bros who're not using any heat-shield packages yet, do consider since it'll help keep your aircon from working too hard.

My fuel consumption is about 350km per full-tank, so it's not very good. Probably can attribute it to the start-stop traffic I face everyday along West Coast Highway, since I dun usually rev hard...

Wrong attitute. Why policemens carry gun when they do not shoot people? And why people buy SUVs when there are no off-road tracks in SG? Its not the point that you have a fast car that you must drive fast. Just like a really rich person need not say he is rich to prove to others he is rich. If he really is rich; people will know.

If i wanted fast, i could have gotten way faster cars.

"Teach the woman to appreciate the 8, problem fixed."

What a egoistic statement.

Secondly, did you read that she is 9 months pregnant? Or you are a person who will still whack the car with a pregant wife in it?

Dude, I wasnt saying to drive nuts with her in the car.

She was complaining about gas mileage. Not the way you were driving.

Cars and guns are two different stories. You dont buy a Corvette C6 to never unleash the demon, just like you dont buy an RX-8 to be a little girl on the accelerator.

Dont get your panties in a twist.

I think its the way people drive. I suspected that our car consumes more fuel than all other cars on idle. As both me and my wife idles our cars alot; i noticed that we get very bad mileage on the 8.

Dude, you forgot the smiley icon. Then ppl will know you're tongue-in-cheek.

Sigh, how come fuel figures are still so low.. my '88 rx7 averaged 7.0 km/l with around 2-3 rpm redline occasions per tank (until it blew an apex seal).... rx8 should be at least 8.0 km/l lah!

nehmine, i will still get the car when i can afford it!

Actually I discover the Rx8 to consume alot of petrol when even its at idle..

When I say alot its really ALOT ...

When did I discover it? When I start my car engine to install and tune the car sound system. I think I only turn on and off for around a total of 1 hr and it drank aboout 1/4 tank.

I would think that your fuel economy or lack there of , Would be connected to how your ECU does its ignition and fueling. The first few ECU versions runs rich on the top end but later flashs on the ECU has corrected some of that.
What Flash Version are you using for your 8 ? And of course stop-go traffic will kill your mileage and raise your fuel consumption.

morganoh; you turned on and off your car ? Does that imply starting the engine or just turning on the ignition ? If it is the fore mentioned, I think i might me expected. On cold starts, most ECUs inject more fuel to help turn the engine over and bring the engine to operating temperature faster. This might be the cause of your 8s 1/4 tank drinking binge.

I think may be possible. I am now trying to see if i can hit the 9km/l mark in SG.

As i fetch my wife at least 80% of the time. I am carrying more weight than usual. So if i can get 8.3 - 8.4 km/l. 9 without a passenger should be quite possible.

Max I got was 488km in SG driving... average is around 435km per full tank. I'm still testing the Deceleration Fuel-Cutoff mode and so far the results seem to indicate that it really does work.

I thought the car automatically cuts fuel on deceleration?
