Rust will form the minute you drive it in winter.
You need to rust proof it every year! Krown is your friend.

And even then, after about 10-14yrs (depending on how much attention you've given the car) eventually you'll need another car. The metal will only sustain so many Canadian winters before it surcomes to the inevitable.

 

^ why do you ruin my life Neo . Assuming the previous owner rust proofed (cause i see yellow stuff in the door jams and stuff) can my car go through ONE winter without being rust proofed .

 

i drive my 8 more in the summer driving season than most do in 2 yrs so i figure i'm having more than enough fun to keep her in good condition to last many more rust free yrs. i put on about 35 000km a season

 

I bring my car to oil gard twice a year. It still looks great underneath. I love driving it too much to park it for any substantial amount of time.

I honestly didn't mean to ruin your life...
You know how our winters are. Any car exposed to it will surcome to the inevitable.
This being said, at least the previous owner rust proofed the car a bit. But I wouldn't rely on just the 1 time coating. Get that sucker Krowned already!!

I wonder how the new hybrid/electric cars are going to withstand our winters... I'm keeping a sharp eye on the progress of the Chevy Volt.

 

The 8 is so much fun in the winter.. it's not worth storing at IMHO to lose 5 months in a year of driving...

See the thing with the new hybrid/electric cars is you wont see much rust until 3 years down the road. I too am curious to see if the magnetic thing really works.

OH also i was going to pass on the rust proofing this year cause apparently its better to rust proof early in spring before winter to let the oil set or something (something i read while doing a bit of research).

 

There are a ton of theories here and there... the only people who truly know are the ones who've kept their cars longer than the standard 5yr period.
There's never a bad time to get rust proofing done. As long as it's done.

I always get mine done before the start of the winter season. Usually around Oct or so.

Oh one last thing !! Sorry neo lol. But i know Krown is known to drill holes... do you just ask them no drilling ???

 

As I said, if you want to get decent protection from salt, you'll let them drill holes. It's only a few and you'll never really notice them.

At first I was reluctant to have the holes drilled. But then I saw the benefits, and decided to go through with it.

You can ask no drilling, but there's no gurantee 100% rusting proofing will be done. You know, you can only get into so many crevices without removing a slew of body parts and what not.

I say its a good trade off...well as long as you wash the car frequently like Footman haha

i just need to get a winter beater i enjoy driving as much as the 8. i've put serious thought into buying two 8's since you cant replace things fast enough when your putting close to 100 000km annually. i'm really thinking about a 2nd gen miata or a mazda 3.

 

so are we gonna attempt a go-karting event again this winter?

Regarding the winter beater vs. driving the 8...

If you commute all the time then using the 8 in winter is a bit painful
The gas alone... I was getting around 320 - 360 km @ $60+ per tank
Then there's an expensive set of winters
Then there's wear and tear...
All to commute 90% of the time...

The Jetta gets 500+km on a $50+ fill up
I keep it rust free but I don't really care that much what happens to it
The tires are cheap by comparison
It has heated seats, an iPod hook-up and everything I need for commuting.
I don't have to worry about stressing my baby with cold weather driving.

 

I only drive my Rx8 3 times a week lolz

 

This...feels bad. I dislike snow/my lack of winter tires

 

depending on the weather i may take my 8 down to florida. i've been watching a lot of track videos which helps with the 8 withdrawal, may go with a Go Pro and mount so next winter my track vids will be that much better.

I would go crazy with stress from school if I didn't get to rip around the snowy roads in my 8. and if there's more than a couple inches of fresh snow on the road from the night before, I skip class

studded tires, ftw.

 

I hear yah. I drove my 8 in the winter on the first year I got it and it's not a good look if you don't have winter tires. When I got the set it definitely helped. I stored it last winter and when I took it out this summer, it felt like I'm driving a new car. Definitely a big improvement from the pathfinder hehe.
