I first thought the rattling was from the heat shield but it may be his motor mounts going?

well now I have the noise too... at 86,000 km.. I've started a few threads in the troubleshooting section as well.

Just want to chime in, I've been going through many attempts to find the cure. I'll try a different gas station to see... everything is good and it happens so randomnly too.

I have had the same noises for a couple of years now. That being said i am not convinced i need a new engine cuz seriously if it were a compression issue, it would have kicked it by now. My car is now nearing 100k. I have tried replacing the plugs, wires, and coils (and battery too while i was at it) to make sure it wasn't that a couple of times now incase something went out. Still to no avail. I took it for a drive immedately following replacing all items and resetting the computer. Took off, was even worse off as far as rough idle/dying. Went to pull a code at auto zone, now its saying i have a bad MAF sensor. I hear they went out a lot cuz of drop in K&N's which i had as well and found on here some people saying to try it as well as what i had done already. Still nothing. Replaced it, and then another code popps up saying a heated o2 sensor 00037! I can't win for losing. I read on here too that the SSV could be sticking which would make sense. I once overfilled my oil a little before this problem happened and had temporary blow by. Sometimes on the interstate after climbing a hill it will keep accelorating sometimes more than 5mph before i make it stop. The sound I get is just like the sound in the video. It happens inconsistantly though. When it does happen it happens until i shut it down for a while. then it may not do it again for days/weeks/months. Its annoying and of course some considerable power loss when this happens. My car really really hates to be restarted after shutting it off even after ample time to warm up. Sometimes my car dies at idle and wont restart for a while unless i push start it and it just picks up and goes like nothing happened and usually runs fine afterwards. Its so inconsistant and random it makes it hard to diagnose. I am not to motivated to replace this o2 sensor. it says its in bank 1 sensor 2 so i think that its a downpiple sensor. So that wouldn't be the cause of it right? So now after all i have done im thinking the SSV might be my best bet. Any thoughts? This is similar to what has been discussed. Any other stories/tips/tricks to cure this?

Loss of power when hot, hard to start when hot, noise when accelerating when hot... replaced wires/plugs/coils didn't fix it (may help a little)...

All too familiar to me now. Compression problem. At least it was for me

it would do it consistantly every time though if it was a compression problem. but this is intermitten. Im crossing my fingers and hoping i just need to seafoam it. sounds like a sunday project.

My problems (difficult starting when hot, noise/lack of power when accelerating hard) came and went. You know how it goes, I'd have a terrible time starting it at the gas station, then drive it home to show the problem to my friends who know cars and... it would start fine of course. Then next day it'd be a problem again.

But a dealer said my coils were bad too, so who knows which things were causing which...

Anyone who has similar problem and had a compression test performed, what were the results?

Has there been a fix for this problem other than a new engine? Was it the gas? Does it need to be pre mixed? Is it from carbon buildup? Would a different oil help? Does the oil level need to be kept at full consistently? Cat problem? Coolant temperature sensor failure? I have noticed from the forum that it occurs more often on AT cars. Any help would be appreciated? Looking for some conclusion/direction.

I too have a rattle around 4200rpm. Mine is manual. I first noticed it after having the engine replaced. My first thought was something was wrong with the transmission cause with the noise the shifter vibrates a bit more. Mine does it whether its cold or warm. Since it has started the dealership has replaced both motor mounts, tranny mount, aligned the transmission, all with no success. Someone had said it may be the engine and that would explain it but I have a different idea, maybe someone can confirm. I'm thinking it may be the clutch release bearing.
If the sound is always at the same rpm we can safely assume its before the driven gears. Also, it took the dealership months to replace my engine, meaning this bearing was exposed for some time. So if anyone has had this rattle/noise and changed their clutch and release bearing I'd like to know if it solved the problem. Another reason I think it may be bearing related is that sometimes when accelerating at the top of the rpm range the engine doesn't rev as it should, kind of like something is holding it back. Although this could be another problem all together.
