Unhappy Odd rattling/growling noise from the engine at 5k rpm

Well i'm now into the 2nd month of my new engine (about 6000km on the clock) and i've already done 2 oil changes(just to be safe). Yet all of a sudden midway through last week i start hearing a really odd noise.

When accelerating and i hit between 5k - 6k rpm i get this really unpleasant sounding rattle/growling noise from the engine. It happens in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears (may happen higher up but by then the wind noise drownds it out). It almost sounds like something is vibrating around inside the engine, which REALLY scares me!! I'm hoping it's something silly like a bad motor mount, but i dont think so as the car doesnt shake when idling.

Other than this evil noise everything runs beautifully.

I have an appointment booked with Scarboro Mazda for this Thursday morning. Hopefully Colin can figure out whats wrong with her.

Fingers crossed that its something minor / stupid..

good luck figuring this out man. Ive had this problem since the day before the niagara cruise and still havent found out what it is. ive given up looking really. Also worth note, if yours is the same as mine, it wont do it until there is some real heat in the engine. for me, it takes like 10 minutes plus of driving before the noise rears its ugly head. If yours is the same, make sure to tell colin because he'll be looking for a noise that wont be there until he's given up trying to hear it and parked the car and calling you crazy. haha.

argh, not the helpful words i was looking for Greg!!!

But i dont think we are in the same boat here, mine will do it right away, i tested it out when the car was cold and it made the same noise, but i normally i dont let the rpm's get up that high untill the engine warms up a bit

The 3rd set of ports kick in around 6,000 RPM. It could be related to the mechanism that controls the valve for those ports. I think you can connect a hand vacuum pump to the valve and see how it moves. Once your above 7,000 RPM is the noise still there?

Does it sound like "Marbles in a Can"? Do a search on that or "MIAC".

Naaa, i've always had that "Marbles in a can" sound... always thought it was just the way the car was, didnt bother me enough to do anything about it (i guess i should), but i've already had the maf cleaned once, and then replaced and the marbles in a can noise stayed...

FACK! it sounded for a moment like we had the same problem but i have brand new motor mounts on mine and the problem was there before and after the install....is it the mount itself or the bracket?

Apparently its the mount. It looks like when the engine was changed the threads on the inside of the mount were stripped. When Colin went to tighten the bolt it just spun in its hole. Which means at the right rpm's that bolt is probably what is vibrating around and making that very scary noise.

well kevin, im glad for you. but what about me? lol. I still have this aweful noise...i think. ive been driving like a little old laddy for a while now so i havent noticed if the noies is there or not. too many friends getting speeding tickets all of a sudden.

For the record, the 8 gets the same aweful mileage no matter how you drive. lol. I thought it was largely to do with how you are always tempted to drive spiritedly...try two weeks of accelertaing slowly to the speed limit, shifting at or under 3 grand...its just as bad. haha.

lol... if you NEVER see above 3.5k you can squeeze an extra 50-70km out of the tank... though trying to do this is the most frustrating and difficult thing I've ever done in the car.

At this point I just don't give a rats... I've come to terms with getting my 275km to a tank (all city driving) before the yellow period shows up.

Greg, That sucks, hopefully you get it figured out soon! Yeah i tried driving like an old lady for about a week and a half some time last year and got the same mileage, so that went out the window real quick..... bring on the heavy foot!!!

I also have these rattling noises. They ordered new plus and wires. Apparently it could be misfiring, and pinging due to carbon built up on the spark plugs and corrosion on the wires. Or so they say. We shall see. It only happens when I have been driving around a lot (like 2 hours worth). I have had all of the engine mounts changed already.

On another not: That mileage sounds really bad. On a normal tank I average 380KM the lowest I have gotten was around 330KM, and I have only gotten that once or twice. We dont have things called "highways" in Thunder Bay, so its all city driving for me.

i cant imagine it being plugs and wires. i have all new coils plugs and wires on mine and it did this noise before the swap and after the swap.

for the record max km I got for a tank was about 250, or maybe I saw 300 last year? not even sure..
I'm at 160km on the tank ATM and it's a good bit below half...

EDIT: All city mileage tho..
