I had this problem years ago and they had to replace my whole fuel tank. Is it under warranty?

thats rediculous.

ive seen 8s with problems with the senders in the tank. their are two of them, one on either side (under each of the rear seats actually) and if one is bad the cluster thinks one sender is claiming that side of the tank is full then you will never see bellow half a tank. In any case, this isnt something thats easy to diagnose or fix on your own. you need a special tool to remove the caps on the tank without ruining them. You also need a bit of no how to find out which one is bad or if its possibly a wiring problem along the line. take it to your mazda dealer!!!

Edit: also maybe do your mazda dealer a favor and dont bring the car in with a full tank. its also doing yourself a favor as they are going to be less likely to spill/drip gas in your interior when working on it/removing the senders.
