Canadian Foglight Rewire

I searched and searched and searched but couldn't find any detailed instructions to do the DRL bypass as explained by StealthTL in this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-fog-light-rewire-11737/

If any Canadians are interested in some pics of the DRL module, you can see them here:

Pick of rewire as per StealthTL's instructions.

Please explain...?!
Wire colors that you spliced
How does it function compared to just turning on the parking lights at the switch?

Thanks for DIY!

I didn't want to make this a DIY, more so an (Add on) for Canadian members. The DIY link at the beginning of my first post has an explanation of the little splice you have to do under the fuse box in the engine compartment, but those instructions are for US Spec cars that DO NOT have DRL (Daytime Running Lights) which is required by law for Canadian cars. This means not only do you have to do the instructions for the US cars, but you also have to do what I showed above to get power to the fogs working outside of the DRL restricting module.

Functionality is that you do not have to have your halogens turned on to have the fog lights work. I followed the Omicron instructions for the under the hood stuff which also protects your battery by cutting power when your key is out. Basically you can have your fogs on in any light position, even off (Daytime Running Lights) as long as the key is in the ignition and turned to the power on position. Took me no longer than 30 minutes or so to complete the whole thing.

Follow Omicron's instructions in the DIY Thread above while also following Stealths canadian car corrections below using my pics as guidelines.

To bypass the DRL module (behind the glovebox) you need to connect the 'fog in'(light green&black) and 'fog out'(yellow&red) at the big DRL connector. They are side by side at the lower left of the connector. Also, the 'brown' wire on US cars is 'brown&white' striped for DRL models, but it IS the same wire as in the Omicron instructions.

The only added note is that it seems there are two YELLOW / RED next to the GREEN/BLACK. Make sure you do the one BESIDE not in the next row on top since that will turn the halogens on full time

Nice write-up!
I'm putting together a DIY index for this forum.
DO you mind if I add this thread to it?
Thank you....

No problem, as long as you clearly indicate this is the mod for DRL cars only and requires the first DIY thread to fully complete.

Arrow Not so quick.....

Not quite so easy to disable the DRLs.......

The way they work is the module controls the grounding to dim them - grounds both for hi-beam, and grounds the drivers side thru the passenger side for dim (DRL)

You would need at least one relay to bypass the module, I am working on it for my HID hi-beam project .

Easy ... have one of your high beam bulbs die.

Did you make any progress on this. I think my DRL relay got fried with the mod above.

The DRL modules are notorious for dieing...I've had 2 replaced on mine already.

They keep replacing them for me free...even though the warranty is up......

Mine is messed up too. Once in a while it'd only send power to one side of the halogen, turning it into high beam.

i have also noticed that the putting on the e-brake turns off the DRL's that means there is a switch that when u pull up on the e-brake it sets the switch(u can also hear it), so if u can tap into that switch and make it all on to the DRL's are always off and u just have the fogs running it would look cools too.

turning off DRLs

i have rewired so my fogs can be turned on anytime using ACC power to the relay but i really dont like having the DRLs on. Has anyone found out what wire to cut so the highs don't turn on at low power?????

how to disable DRLs

To cover my butt so no one can say I'm breaking the law by turning your drls off I'm adding a switch in the directions so when your on public roads you can return your DRLs to normal operation.

Here is what i did to disable my DRLs.

Cut the Gray wire "1B" in the big connector about 2" way from the blue box and caped it off.

Connect a 3" wire onto the Blue and Red wire "2D" in the small connector and run it to a small toggle switch and connect the Grey wire leading out of the big connector to the other side of the switch.

What this does is act like you have put the parking break on and turns the DRL off when you turn the switch on.

I have tested all the lights and everything is working just fine, now i can use my fogs as DRLs or no lights at all.

Resurrecting this one once more... I attached my black/white (brown in US models) wire to the red/black wire of the tail fuse (MazdaManiacs way so park lights must be on for fogs to be on). This will still work right? All this does is allow power to the fog relay without the DRL's on?

from what i know, my buddy tapped the fog wire into the accessory wire in the fuse box under the hood and now when i put the accessories on with my key, the fogs turn on no matter what.

now i need to look into disabling my DRL's... i changed my parking lights to LED's which look A LOT better with the HIDs but realized that the parking lights aren't the DRLs and the bulbs next to them are lol

bump !! Im helping my buddy do this rewire. I did mine but my rx8 is from the states so it was easy as pie. Now i know the wires are different colours and you have to bypass the DRL.

Do i just disconnect the DRL behind the glove box and proceed with the regular DIY for fog light rewire. (except the brown wire in US cars will be black/white and connect it to the red/white wire)

Is this right ?
