Does this make sense :

1) Check out car... let him know whether ill buy it or not

2) Do all the paper work... insurance etcc....

3) Meet back another day to pick up the car ? And pay. Whether it be in toronto or hamilton

deposit, fairly sure you cant get insurance till the car's in your name. i dont think the seller will let you put it in your name till its been paid for.

Once you have decided, pay a deposit so he does not sell it on you. Call your insurance company and give them all the details so that they can insure it. The first thing they will do is check for leans! No insurance company will insure until they have checked that. If you stop by their office they should be able to supply you with a temp insurance slip so you can go get the plates. Once you have paid for the car, take the ownership and temp ins. and get your plates. Pick up your car and your ready to go!

Personally.... i get nervous about giving some random person a deposit lol in my opinion, if he's honest enough to hold your deposit.. he's cool enough to wait for a reasonable time frame for your decision (1 day possible 2?)

If you are dealing with a distance ... give the guy $100 in good faith. You need to have him hold the car for you to give you time to put matters into effect. He wants to sell the car. He already knows you want it. He knows you are serious if you leave a deposit. If you do not ... then someone else could come along and buy it out from under you.

If the person selling has not gotten a used vehicle package yet ... a quick call to your insurance company by phone will answer that question to help put your mind at ease.

ya good point Scoot.. 100 bucks isn't too bad for a security blanket if you really like the car...

Anyways OP, all the best on the purchase! My fav. colour is what you're getting: black black and more black!

Some real good advise here.
I am always cautious of qualified mechanics. They might be excellent with your car cause they are getting paid for it. Heard about the wife who keeps calling for a tow cause her car breaks down.
Not saying this is the case.
This Car might be in excellent shape and well taken care of or he just fixed everything now so he can sell it.
Check for any liens. Get a qualified mechanic to look over the car.

Don't give a cent cause u might not get it back if u don't go with the sale.
Just be cautious with your big investment.
Best of Luck.

Alright so I'm kind of overwelmed with this whole process rigght now. I'm new to this and I need some guidance. Someone pmed and pointed out that this car might possibly have a lien. Now what happens if it does have a lien ? and also its an american rx8 (which is good cause I originally wanted to buy one in the states ) but I ran a carfax and it has 3 owners which worries me a bit. One more thing the omv ... Can he provide that for me or do I have to go get it myself?

Please help me I'm going to check out the car tuesday. Thanks

I'm not sure what's the process but in the end you have to make sure it's paid off or else when you buy the car, you are official responsible for it.

To be honest I prefer a Canadian vehicle because I prefer headlight washers compare to tire monitoring. Usually, US cars aren't really rusty but since the person drove it in Canada, i doubt it'll matter now if it was a daily driver. Please run Carproof, it's more expensive but a lot more reliable. Especially since we're in Canada and your car's from the states. More proof: http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/200...ce-carfax.html

3 owners to me is not too much of a big deal, my black RX-8 had 3 owners previously. It just makes you question why it was sold so many times. But to put it in perspective, owner in states -> 2nd owner imported it -> 3rd owner is the Tech. If you look at it that way, it looks less scary lol

What's OMV? Office of Motor Vehicle? lol if i'm guessing.... the Used Vehicle Package? Yes you can get that yourself.

He didn't mention anything about buyinf it off someone who imported the car

We are selling*the vehicle as we are starting a family, and*a sports car isn't*kid-friendly. This vehicle*was purchased from Canadian*Auto Associates in Guelph, in September of 2008 for $27,000. We have since added new Summer*Tires, and purchased winter tires last fall. It*is originally a US vehicle, and we have the Carfax report. It has been registered with Mazda Canada.

I asked him about the lien and here:

We purchased the car from a used*car dealer in Guelph, and*as you*are aware the car was originally from*the*USA so we are the second owners, we have the car fax report to prove it,*yes there is a lien on the car, by our bank, we will make arrangements once a deposit has been put on the car for obvious reasons we are not going to pay the loan*off until the car has been sold we will give all*bank documentation once we have sold the car.

Any help guys ?? Im telling him where to meet on tuesday and what time. Im having a mechanic check out the car as well. Now im gna tell him that ill give him a deposit of 100 if i buy the car. I was thinking that he might wat the deposit before dealing with the bank cause hes proably going to use that money to pay off the loan, cause as he said, hes only going to make bank arrangements after a deposit is given. SO ill tell him that tonight. Any other tips you guys can give me would be great.

Also, since it was imported from the us. Should i ask for documents regarding the import (ie. RIV documents, form 1 and 2, and canadian approval form or anything like that ?

My take on this is that you should arrange to follow or meet him at his bank. Once there, he can settle the lean and the bank can release the car for the transfer of ownership to you.

If he is needing your money to settle all or part of the lean then he may pay back some of the lean from his reserves (if it is more) and you then pay him (at the bank). Then that money is extracted by the bank and the lean is settled.

If the lean does not get settled and you have purchased the car ... in time the previous owner (current seller) defaults on his lean ... the bank has the right to seize your car until the lean is settled.

Ok ... this sounds scary but it is just an extra step and additional time. Contact the seller and ask him if he is comfortable with this arrangement. If he is ok with it, then check the car out and go through with it if you still like the deal. If he does not like the arrangement, then walk away!!

My two cents!

Here is what i was thinking. Cause liek i have mentioned i am checking out the car tuesday ! I was thinking of giving him a deposit of about 100 (like someone said), have him settle his lean. Meet back with him, have him show me the bank documents, and then pay the rest of the car. Would this way work as well ? Its only 100 bucks and if he does run away with it, no biggie at least i didnt lose 17 000.

I bought my car a year ago ('06 with 22k). Carfax showed a clean record, but Carproof showed an accident. People are afraid of cars that have been in accidents. Why? If it's been fixed properly who cares?

I wouldn't freak out about the lien on the car. Just put in the contract you sign that he will clear all liens on the car.

Don't get overly committed to one car. There are lots of cars out there and more will come along. Don't get overly anxious about things, that never helps.

then goodluck make sure the mechanic looks for over spray and best thing is get a paint reader and check if paint thickness matches the car all around.. so you can tell if theres repaint

OH trust me. Ive been through that road .. not to stick to one rx8 but believe me. IN the past month i have checked ou over 5 rx8s and all of them i had to turn down. But i truly think this is the one.

call Mazda USA with the VIN, they can tell you if any warranty or recall work has been done on the car, AND they can tell you the original selling dealer/phone number...call the orig selling dealer and ask them about service history, oil changes, etc...Never believe everything you read in a persons ad, a lot of people are just telling you what u want to hear...

sorry, missed some of the above threads... a 3 owner car will definitely be tough to track service history on, but still worth a try i say. Personally, i'd stay away from multi-owner cars, everybody drives their car differently, and it can be very hard on a car...

good luck... .. .
