Buying RX8 soon, what do you think?

Alright so ive been on my search for an rx8 for so long now. I was originally going to import one from the states. Had countless hours of research done but i have decided to just buy one in Canada, its alot easier. So i found one im interested in. Went to look at it and it looks MINT. Like brand new. Its a 2005 with 35 500 km. Now here is where im worried. Does it make sense that in 5 years, the owner only drove 35 500km ? Makes no sense to me. I have a car proof and a carfax and the history looks good. However there is no info on oil changes etccc etc... My question to you is ... would you buy this ?? They were asking 18 500. Good price ? Bad price? Sketchy? How can i find out how many km the car truely has or if it is in fact 35 500 km ?

Help me out thanks.

it prob has 35 000km its really hard to trick the trips on modern cars. but would you really want to pay 18 for a 2005? why not buy a 2007 with 35 000 on it.

why are you interested in buying a low mileage car? the only reason i see for buying a low mileage car is if you dont plan on driving it much. whats the point in spending all the money on a low milage car when your just going to rack up the miles on it anyways.

you want a great car in great condtion go buy rotary gregs car.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'd love a newer model. But it seems they are all above 20 grande in price. I just want a bb gt with black leather. So if you're saying is way over priced maybe I should forget this one. The car looked brand new though, even had the new car smell.

My '05 (bought new March '06) only has 26k miles on it, so no, not crazy. I drive a 'beater' Jeep in the Winter.

It's unfortuante it doesn't have a service history, but given the low mileage as long as it's had all pertinent MSP/TSB's performed you should be fine.

I put less than 15k on my car a year since I don't drive it to work or drive it in the winter. If someone had it as just a weekend car, it wouldn't be too surprising to see that kind of mileage.

Alright so the mileage is probably legit. But is the price too much for an 05 with 35 500 ??
They want 18 500.

I would contact forum member 01racing. They had a 05 RX8 come into their dealership, the Toyota Dealership on Airport Rd. 01racing, the the General Manager there, first name Al. There was a thread about it posted last week I believe. At least you know its from a dealer, and being a rotor head himself, you can trust that the car has been thoroughly checked out by them.

hmm I'm more in tune with wholesale prices (father is a wholesaler) - but even then 18 500 RETAIL price sounds pricey to me - considering its an 05 despite its low K's.

Im thinking more in the 15 range at best =S ? At the dealer auctions these 8's are going for next to nothing!

My 2 cents...$18500 for a 20005 even with that little km is a bit steep...I paid $15k for my 04 and it had 48k on it...there are many options on the buy and sell thread...have a look and take your time...I'm sure you'll find a great deal..

Why not go for a private sales? You save on the tax, no sales pitch and have an idea how the previous owner treated the car... ie how often the oil levels are checked...

Just a thought...

My question is if i were to drive down on sunday and check it out. WOuld i be able to give the guy a cheque and take the car that day or would i have to go back to toronto and figure out insurance and stuff before driving it back and then pick it up another day.

Avante Mazda's got an '09 R3 demo for sale in Black.
it says $34,995. But a buddy of mine went in there and they offered $30,000 flat.

I don't know if you want to spend that much, but its nice.

First off, you HAVE to get insurance (can't drive a vehicle with no insurance). Just grab the VIN and contact your insurance company. Moving on...

1. It depends on a lot of things.... assuming it's a private sale:

a) Safety Test
- yes: go to b)
- no: temp license (more info later)

b) Emissions Test (since it's 2010, odd Model Year vehicles requires it, even should be on file)
- yes go to c.
- no: temp license (more info later)

c) Vehicle Package
- yes go to d.
- no: seller should give it to you, cost $20. It proves that there's no liens, the "status" of the car etc. etc. but you can still buy it later

d) Get to the closes ministry of transportation office
- they'll ask for your insurance policy, vehicle package, license plate if you have your own (also bring your registration to that plate) if not you just pay money for a new one.

NOTE: temp license last 10 days and you can apply for 2 in a year. You can not have a temp license on vehicles that are set "unfit".

All info needed to know about private purchase (PLEASE READ): http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dan...cle/used.shtml

2. If it's a dealer = NO! explanation below:

a) safety and e-tested
- you won't be able to because they usually don't safety until a sale and same goes with emissions test (2010 = odd Model Year has to do it)

b) If it's a dealer (sold as is):
- If a dealer sells an "as is" vehicle, once they transfer ownership the status will be set to "unfit" so you will not be able to get a temp license aka. you have to tow the vehicle or if you're lucky and have a dealer plate; you can use that.

Some advice buying used:
- GET A MECHANIC TO CHECK IT OUT! major stress on that...
- call a good mazda dealership to run the vin to see if all recalls has been done
- carproof! NOT carfax
- check for rust in strut towers.... if that's rusted run away from the car
- check their oil level... see if the person took care of his rx8
- honestly.... you don't want to buy a car the first time you see it..... your emotions will take over your logic. Hamilton to Toronto is not a big distance in my opinion to purchase a car right away...
- and the usual things you look for... (replaced body panels... check all electronics... etc etc)

Now regarding the cheque: If the person is smart, they'll ask for a certified cheque. To get that you have to go to the bank with the person's full name to get a certified cheque.

I apologize if i miss anything and for my horrible sentence structure / grammar; it's late and i'm tired .... i might be just typing random stuff at this point.... but i figure this information is important for you...

I bought a Talon once in Windsor. The wife and I enjoyed a nice drive out to see it. When I went back to pick it up I took Via out there ... and when I stepped off the train I was escorted to the back seat of an unmarked cruiser! Ok .. ok ... the guy I bought it from was a cop! Loved the drive back home!

Distance is not that important. Just do your homework up front to be certain the car is what you believe it to be ... then get them to agree to hold it for you due to the distance you are traveling. They will have mechanics in their area ... check ahead and make a few calls.

If the car is really what you are looking for, and the price is what you are agreeable to ... then just imagine the ride home!

Thanks for the info guys ! The guy actually works in toronto and hes agreed to meet up after work next week to let me check out the car. However, i asked for pics before even going to check it out. He will be sending those today he said. He apparently is a license technician (stated on his ad)... and the price is agreeable and i told him that. So well see how it goes thanks everyone.
