Seriously, Drewman, are you referring to the exhaust volume from within the car or as a spectator? I found that the removeable silencers actually had the reverse effect on the exhaust volume from within in the car when they were installed (it was louder!!!). It was better with them removed (obviously louder for spectators though)!

The biggest surprise I got was the reduction in exhaust volume in the car after extending the tips 3 inches. I'm no acoustics guru, but it appears that the exhaust sound waves were able to resonate/excite with something or the rear structure/components of the RX-8 when the tips were too short. Who would have thought that an extra 3 inches would have had such an effect. It appears that the extensions have reduced the exposure of what ever was being excited by the exhaust sound waves.

By the way this is all "seat of the pants", no db meter here...although I should have done a before and after test as I have access to such an instrument. Futhermore, there is definitely a resonance at 3000rpm (all of my rotors have had that, even with different exhausts; turbochargers included), 4th gear at 70kph which is load related.

In spite of all this, I love the sound of the TurboXS system and don't find the volume obscene or offensive....but I'm biased as I've always been a fan of the wankel

Cheers,
Danny

ps. Drewman have you had your tips extended as yet?

It takes a while to get used to it without silencers, i was driving with them on for a while than without them, but now i dont use them anymore. Can confirm the deep resonance at around 3k.

By resonance, do you guys mean that boomy sound, sometimes referred to as a drone that some rotors get?

FWIW, the Hymee doesn't 'suffer' from that. Under 4K it's pretty tame and then gets progressively louder above that. Kind of the best of both worlds - you only really hear it when you're having a go but can drive normally without scaring little children . No drone at cruising revs either.

Hey guys!

finally got some piccies up of the exhaust!

I got it extended 3 and a quarter inches so it doesnt melt the shrouds.

When i got home yesterday I felt the shrouds themselves and they were hot werent soft or pliable or anything.

I've also noticed that the race pipe is officially the lowest thing on the car and scrapes everything i drive over! :S

Its a good inch lower than the stock pipe!

Next thing on the list is some tein flex and raise it up an inch or so.

That way, my soul doesnt get ripped away every time i go up a driveway...

The pipes or the mesh?

I made the mesh myself with some mesh i bought at supercheap auto for $30

The hardest part was shaping it with a bastard file and some tin snips

Awww, thanks kall!

I am happy with the work that the guy did for my exhaust.

All up the exhaust cost me $435, installation was $80, tips were $70 and labour for the cutting and re-welding extention was $130.

Total cost - $715

Not too bad considering the amount of work that had to be done!

Very happy with my purchase and plan on enjoying it in the many years to come!

Next on the list is some tein flex coilovers!!!

Damn this mod stuff is addictive!

which part of the "red" lower rear bumper bar does the silver mech need to break up, so there wont be too much red on the lower rear bumper bar?

Fair point Eric but FWIW I'd leave the mesh silver too. Or take it to black...

gees, someone must got up on the wrong wide of the bed.... i

f there were too much red, then why bother to get matching red number plates and colour-code the brake calipers. when you were talking about the silver mesh breaking up the red, most ppl would automatically thinking about the lower rear bumper bar, because thats where the silver mesh is located/attached.

who wants arguments? and providing entertainment to other ppl isnt always a bad thing.

i dont need to powdercoat, cos i have elected to go with colour coading.

anymore coming my way?

And in one fell swoop half of this forum's traffic just disappeared.

Just kidding.
