Sneaky peak at the new MX-5
Taking the cue from the Media section of the forum, I checked out the German site AutoBild.de for the first pics and specs of the new Mazda roadster (one of the few chances I get to work out my German). I think it looks good. It has elements of the Ibuki concept with some hints of the RX-8. Basic motor is 2L 4cyl. 16V 118kW 188NM. Very strong backbone, so an RX-8 base is likely.

I think it has the makings of a new classic.

labrat, I was doing a search for Mazda wreckers (chasing up a bit for a future project) when I came upon a forum (abc science something) that had a few posts from a labrat circa 2002....this sure sounds like you!!!

"When the oil really begins to run out them these "alt" engines and fuels will be dragged out of the storage warehouses. The oil companies will seem to 'save the day'".
- Love to see the conspiracy theorests out on a Friday. The truth is, the oil companies and the car companies are moving on. Fuel cells are the next generation. Split cycle, Wankel rotaries, Orbital engines, they're still internal combustion engines, which would involve car companies in massive re-tooling capital expenditures. Look what has been spent on developing the Wankel motor over the past 40 years, and how many models is it seen in? 1 (one). With mission controls becoming ever tighter, the internal combustion engine is reaching the end of its tether. Alfa's "Stoichiometric" technology is probably just about as good as its going to get. Fuel cells are massively more efficient. I think we will eventually see a move from hydrogen fuel cell technology to those powered by methanol, which is easily made from natural gas and other petroleum feedtstocks. Fiddling around with funny new internal combustion engines has a sort of dodgy smell about it.

Hey.....we're going to be the first in the world to have it on show!!
From today's Australian......
Melbourne turns up the heat
Neil McDonald and Robert Wilson
March 02, 2005
"MELBOURNE'S motor show will restake its claim as the premiere event on Australia's motoring calendar this year, with a glittering line-up and at least one world debut - the Mazda MX-5.
The show benefits from a scheduling clash with the prestigious annual Geneva show in Switzerland, which means the next generation of the most successful roadster ever, the Mazda MX-5, will be seen first in Melbourne......"
Howzat??!! :D
The Melb Motor Show starts this Thursday, I think....

A bloody minded experiment to see if someone would comment. I just selected the first non-sticky on the last numbered page in the forum index and plopped a smiley in there.
Sure enough, made you look!
Ok, it was a stoopid whim, sorry...
