Would the shape of our fuel tank suit LPG though?

I thought LPG tanks had to be cylindrical?

 

Why would they have to be cylindrical?

If it does, I'm sure you can get a couple of cylinders made up instead.

I dont see why they would have to be cylindrical, I think most lpg car tanks are like that cause they are cheap to make that way and therefore a "standard". I am sure there are some limitations, but if you want a custom tank, just go ask a gas fitter.

Btw, not sure how many people are aware, but the government is introducing a tax on LPG of 12.5c/litre. Being phase in from 01/July/2008 @ 2.5c/litre and then 2.5c/litre every 01/July being added until 2012. http://www.aph.gov.au/Library/Pubs/R...-04/04rn44.htm

Fair enough. I just kinda figured that a cylindrical tank was better capable of withstanding the higher storage pressure involved with gas. Not sure why I think that.

 

I tend to agree, I am sure there is a reason that these are th "Standard" design, and Im pretty sure it has to do with things like strength and easy to build.

 

Gas cylinders are made cylindrical due to the fact that it lends itself to not having a weak point as there are no seams. All other shapes need seams and hence weak points.

Can't help myself..... In NZ CNG is / or was, (will have a look in a couple of weeks) a fuel option. Slightly less energy than LPG but you can top up at home with the right pump!

Unplug the heater plug in the Rx....

Still I can't figure where the tank fit's (Well!). Hydrogen is in cell's which is easier, cylinder (top of the class gibbo) which can be produced without seams using a big ram is the cheapest and only seamless pressure vessel for gas.

As in New Zealand 95 Ron is $2. 35c per litre and LPG is $1. 25c --- bit of a difference in price. what used to cost me $20 for a spin in the rx8 a year or so ago, now cost $50 plus

 

I have actually thought about the feasibility of an LPG conversion on an RX8 as I have seen rotary's in fast fours magazine in the past that have got more power out of a full LPG conversion than they did on petrol. So it is an interesting thread.. It's funny how tough some of us get when we are on the internet.

 

Holy thread ressurection Batman! If you think prices are bad now, be prepared to have $150+ bucks in your pocket for a re-fill in a couple of years time....!

Anyways, it seems that direct liquid injection probably is too difficult for small shops to solve, due to heat issues. Will prob have to wait for mazda or someone else to develop it.

I wasn't interested in normal lpg...gas conversions, which was what most people thought. What interested me was the potential of it. Although with petrol prices going the way they are, who knows https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/dunno.gif

Rotaries love LPG Taka Our engines are actually well suited to LPG because we inject oil into the combustion chambers already.

I used to own a 1985 Mazda 929 sedan that I fitted a cosmo 13b Twin Turbo engine running straight LPG. It went really well and was very cheap to run. In fact I used to tow my caravan with it

I would have to say that this is one of the most interesting threads I have read. It could be a way to prolong the financial viability of the RX-8 as petrol prices climb. I like the part about about rotaries not losing power with LPG.

 

So, in one of the above oposts, tanks have improved, (well since I had a Jag on Gas) Now its how to do the set up, eg get the gas into the motor,

I'm running this system on my Toyota Corolla and it is perfect. But they do not have solution for Mazda RX-8, the problem is with timings.

 

Timings?? How do you mean??? These got to be away, as many peole have ran rotary on lpg. why can't th rx8?

it sounds like they can't read the firing sequence of the rotary engine or cope with all the different ports opening at different times.

a 4 port auto would be the easier engine to LPG as it doesn't have aux-ports. I'd bet the older rotarys used simpler systems fitted to the top of carburetors.
